    • A catalyst composition for olefin polymerization and copolymerization which contains a transition metal complex with a bidentate or a tridentate ligand and a cocatalyst mixture containing dialkylaluminum halide and dialkylmagnesium.The transition metal complexes with bidentate ligands L have the empirical formula LMX.sub.2, LMXY or L.sub.2 M where M is Ti, V, Zr or Hf; X is an alkoxy group, an aryloxy group, or a halogen atom; Y is a mono- or double-bonded ligand different from X.The bidentate L ligands are described by general formulasZ--R--Z OR Z--R--W--R--Zwhere R is an alkylene group, a cycloalkylene group, an arylene group (unsubstituted or alkyl-substituted) or an alkylarylene group; W is CH.sub.2, O, S, N--R', or SiR'.sub.2 where R' is an alkyl or an aryl group; and Z is an oxygen atom, a sulfur atom, an N--H group or a C(.dbd.O)--O group.The transition metal complexes with tridentate ligands L' have the empirical formula L'MX where M is Ti, V, Zr or Hf; X is an alkoxy group, an aryloxy group, or a halogen atom.The tridentate L' ligands are described by general formulas ##STR1## where R is an alkylene group or an arylene group; and Z and U are different and are an oxygen atom, a sulfur atom, an N--H group or a C(.dbd.O)--O-- group.

    • A catalytic system for polymerizing olefins comprises:(a) a component containing an organoaluminum compound, and(b) a component containiong a titanium halide prepared by a process comprising:(i) intimately contacting a magnesium compound containing halogen or a manganese compound containing halogen with a carboxylic acid to produce an activated product,(ii) optionally treating the activated product with a phenol, and(iii) reacting the activated product, optionally treated with phenol, with a titanium halide compound.The invention also includes a process for preparing component (b) containing a titanium halide, the composition of component (b), and the use of the catalytic system for polymerizing olefins such as ethylene or propylene.

    • A novel catalyst system for the polymerization of alpha-olefins is provided. The catalyst system comprises: (a) an organoaluminum containing component, e.g. triethyl aluminum, and (b) a titanium halide containing component. The titanium halide containing component is obtained by co-pulverizing a halogen containing magnesium compound, e.g. MgCl.sub.2, with an electron-donor compound, e.g. ethyl benzoate, to produce a co-pulverized product. The co-pulverized product is then reacted with an organic phosphite, e.g. triphenyl phosphite, to produce a reaction product. The reaction product is then reacted with a titanium halide compound, e.g. TiCl.sub.4.A novel titanium halide containing component is provided as well as a process for producing said component. A process for the polymerization of alpha-olefins is also provided.

    • A novel catalyst system for the polymerization of alpha-olefins is provided.
