    • A metered dose inhaler (1) has a pressed aluminium vessel, to which is crimped at a neck (2) a valve housing (3) having a dispensing spout (4). Within the vessel is a piston (5), urged by a spring 6 into contact with the medicament liquid (7). A bearing ball (8) is included in the medicament liquid. As the medicament liquid is dispensed in successive doses, the piston is kept in contact with the liquid (7) by the spring (6), with an edge seal (9) ensuring that the liquid does not pass to the spring side of the piston. As the medicament liquid is dispensed, the piston begins to restrict the movement of the ball, until it is scarcely able to move longitudinally of the vessel. This change is discernible as a change in noise of the rattle. Thus the user can know whether there is plenty of medicament liquid left and when he needs to use a new inhaler.

    • A dispenser (1) comprises a can (2) and body (3). The can is an aluminum extrusion with a valve crimped into its mouth, the valve having an outlet spout (4). The crimped region (5) of the can surrounding the valve has a lesser diameter than the can has through the main part (6) of its length. The body has a mouthpiece (11) with a pivotal cover (12) drivingly connected to a cam (13). This bears on the underside of junction member (14), into a socket (15) of which the spout 4 fits. A breath actuated dose release mechanism (16) is provided. The body has a tubular section (7) for receiving the necked down region (5) of the can. A printed paper label (21) is wrapped around the joint between the body and the can to unite the can to the body in position such that when the cover is opened, a dose is dispensed by the cam (13) lifting the junction member and depressing the spout.

    • A dispenser 1 has a source of medicament 2 with a can 3 and a metered dose valve 4. The outlet stem 5 of the valve is fitted to a junction block 6 in a body 7 of the dispenser to which a breath actuated dose release mechanism 8 is connected for release of the medicament through a nozzle 9. The can has an acoustic transducer 11 attached to its side wall 12, in intimate acoustic contact. An electronic package 14, comprising a detection circuit and a driver for a LCD display 15 are also mounted on the can wall, the transducer being connected to the circuit. The detection circuit is arranged to decrement a count shown on the LCD by one for every detection of noise of dispensing/metering of a dose from the can. The detection circuit is programmed to compare the spectrum of the noise with a known dose-dispensing spectrum and to decrement the counter according to the comparison.

    • A medicated inhalant dispenser has a plastics material body having a mouthpiece. A pressurized, inhalant source has a canister and a sprout which his moved towards the canister for release of a dose from the canister. The sprout is accommodated in a junction member, which is movable by a cam connected to a pivotal cover for the mouthpiece. Opening of the cover sets a breath actuable kink valve, having a nozzle through which the inhalant is released and a breath flap actuation. Opening also causes the junction member to be lifted for dose dispensing into the kink valve. Breathing in releases the dose for inhalation. A closed sleeve is provided for abutment of the end of the canister as the junction member is moved towards the canister. Between the canister end and an end of the closed sleeve, an adjustable abutment is provided.

    • A dispenser (1) has a source (2) of medicament with a transparent reservoir (3) of glass sheathed in a transparent plastics material shrink wrapping (4), which provides an enclosure against explosion of the glass in the event of accidental breakage of the glass. The reservoir contains not only a liquid medicament (5), but also a gaseous propellant liable to cause the glass to explode if broken. A valve (6) of the source is within a body (7) of the dispenser. The valve is attached to the reservoir by a crimped on aluminum sleeve (8). With the dispenser inverted the level (14) of the medicament (5) is within the tapered tip when the medicament is close to being used up. As use of the dispenser continues, the level falls progressively faster, giving the user an indication that a fresh dispenser will soon be required.

    • The dispenser (1) is for a medicament in an aerosol container (2), which is mounted in a body (3), within a sleeve (4) in a manner allowing air flow to pass the container, with the aerosol outlet tube (5) received in a socket (6) in a block (7) upstanding from the floor (8) of the body. The container is of the type which dispenses a measured dose on depression of the tube towards the container's body (9). The tube (5) is a gas tight seal in the socket (6). The block has a polyethylene tube (11) adhered into a side opening (12) of the block, in communication with the socket (6). The tube has a pair (13, 14) of kinks in it. Its end opposite from the block is adhered into a piston (15) at a throughbore (16). The piston is housed in a cylinder (17) formed in the body (3). To the outside of the cylinder is clipped an extension (18) of the body, having a mouthpiece (19) with an inhalation orifice (20). The arrangement provides an enlargement (21) in the bore (22) of the cylinder (17). The enlargement steps down in diameter to that of the (non-circular) mouthpiece, providing an abutment for a spring (23) acting on the piston and urging it in the direction of the block. Normally the tube is kinked (13, 14) by the action of the spring to such extent that it is obturated and acts as a valve (24). Thus when a dose is released into the socket (6), it is contained by the valve (24). On inhalation through the mouthpiece, the piston is drawn towards the mouthpiece against the action of the spring by the reduced pressure in the mouthpiece.
