    • A swimming pool cleaner is driven along a submerged surface by water and debris flowing past a turbine positioned between an inlet and outlet of the cleaner. Rollers are rotatably carried on the bottom of the cleaner and forward and aft the proximate an inlet port. The rollers in combination with lower side wall portions of the housing form a plenum for water and enhance adherence of the pool cleaner to the submerged pool surface being cleaner. A hose connector operable with an outlet port is angled toward the forward direction of movement of the pool cleaner such that a suction hose will be placed slightly ahead of the pool cleaner when climbing a side wall surface to provide a weight for keeping the cleaner below the water surface and thus prevent an undesirable sucking of air at the inlet.

    • A submersible cleaner includes a valve within a flow passage for interrupting fluid flow and thus drive the cleaned over submerged surfaces to be cleaned. An element moveable between the valve and a wall surface within the passage reduces a gap formed between them such that flow through the passage is directed along one side of the valve resulting in improved driving power and reduced clogging by debris passing through the passage. The element may be attached to either the valve or the wall, and may make slideable engagement with them. A flexible plate engaging the surface includes a plurality of tongues radially extending about the periphery with each tongue having a lower surface portion contacting the surface to be cleaned and an outmost portion contoured away from the surface.

    • A steering device is attached to a submersible swimming pool cleaner for aiding in turning the cleaner away pool side wall engaging positions and thus allowing the cleaner to move across pool surfaces for performing its cleaning function. The steering device includes elongated rods extending from a connector fitting attached to the pool cleaner hose connector. Driven gears of the pool cleaner connector drive the steering device and cause rod ends engaging a pool side wall to lift and push the cleaner away from the side wall. The fitting and thus the rods are freely rotatable through a limited arc about an axis of rotation of the connector, defined by movement of a gear tooth between stop prongs. The ability of the rods to rotate freely within this arc overcomes a problem of excess drag to the cleaner by the steering device. Further, the rods extend radially outward and downward form the fitting such that the rod tips engage the side wall and initiate a ratchet-like action against the side wall surface which results in an upward force acting on the cleaner for reducing friction between cleaner ground engaging portions and the pool bottom wall surface, thus making it easier to rotate the cleaner for movement along pool surfaces to be cleaned.

    • A mechanism is provided for dislodging a submersible cleaning device from a vertical wall after a predetermined time period on such wall. The mechanism includes an operating gear that engages when the cleaning device climbs the wall. Once engaged, the gear drives a cam mechanism which in turn engages a device for pushing the cleaner off the wall thereby breaking the suction of the cleaning device and causing the cleaning device to drop from the wall. A turning brush is used to break the suction but it will be appreciated that any lever or similar device can be employed.
