    • A system, method and computer-usable medium are disclosed for recovering data from a memory storage device. The operating system (OS) of an IPS comprising a source memory storage device, further comprising stored data, is monitored to detect a defective operating state. If a defective operating state of the OS is detected, then operation of the IPS is terminated, followed by the initiation of IPS boot operations to recover data from the source memory storage device. The OS is bypassed, and initial boot operations are performed from a management controller or from the BIOS of the IPS. Additional boot operations are performed, and once the IPS has been brought to an operative state, a data recovery module is used to transfer data from the source memory storage device to a target storage device.

    • A virtual disk subsystem and method for providing a virtual local drive are disclosed. The virtual disk subsystem includes a channel bridge, such as an Advanced Technology Attachment (ATA) bridge, that receives disk commands from a disk controller, as well as a disk emulator in communication with the channel bridge and a network interface. The disk emulator includes control logic that receives disk commands from the disk controller via the channel bridge and, in response, retrieves data from a remote data storage device and forwards the data to the disk controller, such that the disk controller perceives the remote data storage device as a local device. In an exemplary embodiment, the virtual disk subsystem allows a standard operating system (OS) in a data processing system to function as if the data processing system included the emulated drive.

    • For use in multiport digital conference arrangements wherein speech samples of selected speakers are summed for distribution to the conferees, the disclosed method and apparatus controls the level of speech represented by information samples to be included in an output sample for distribution to the ports and equalizes the speech level between speakers to reduce speech level contrast heard by the conferees. In addition, a speech detector for each port and microprocessor-controlled switching hardware also adjust the signal level represented by samples received on the ports to effect speaker selection. Furthermore, gain coefficients for a port may be incrementally adjusted during a predetermined period of time to avoid noticeble signal level changes when implementing speaker selection.

    • For use in multiport digital conference arrangements wherein the speech samples of selected speakers are summed for distribution to the conferees, the disclosed arrangement features processor-controlled switching hardware responsive to a control signal from a conference control processor. Generated in response to a request from a port for priority treatment, this control signal designates particular conferees as having assigned priority treatment such as attendant and broadcast priority in the speaker selection process. In addition, the arrangement also includes a speech detector for each port. By evaluating the conferee's assigned priority treatment, the conferee's speech level, and other factors, each conferee is dynamically assigned an adjusted priority level by a conference processing program. The speech samples of only the highest priority level conferees are summed to control various types of distortion and to permit designated conferees to be always heard by the other conferees.
