    • An apparatus has a first H-bridge having a first motor contact on a shared first side and a second motor contact on a second side. The apparatus also has a half H-bridge having a third motor contact on a third side, wherein the shared first side of the first H-bridge and the third side of the half H-bridge may be operated as a second H-bridge. Another apparatus has a first H-bridge having a first motor contact on a shared first side and a second motor contact on a second side. The other apparatus also has a switch coupled to a third motor contact, wherein the shared first side of the first H-bridge and the switch may be operated as a partial H-bridge. A method of operating an alternate H-bridge and a method of flexibly using an H-bridge circuit on an ASIC are also provided.

    • A pen controller in a thermal printer generates a pulse width modulated (PWM) signal based on a reference voltage. The PWM signal is passed through a filter, resulting in a first voltage that varies with the duty cycle of the PWM signal. Additionally, a temperature sensing resistor on a pen of the printer generates a second voltage that varies with the temperature of the pen. A comparator is used to compare the first and second voltages to determine when the pen is at a proper temperature for printing. As the actual reference voltage in a printer may vary from its intended value due to variations in the fabrication process used to create the components of the printer, the printer is calibrated to account for such variations. The printer is calibrated by the pen controller changing the duty cycle of the PWM signal (thereby changing the first voltage) while the second voltage remains relatively constant. The comparator compares the first and second voltages and identifies when the duty cycle results in a first voltage that matches the second voltage. The pen controller can read, via an analog to digital converter channel, the value of the second voltage. Based on both the value of the second voltage (at the point where it which matches the first voltage), and the duty cycle at that point, the pen controller can calculate the actual reference voltage.

    • A variable rate defibrillator charging circuit includes a power transformer that accepts an internal battery output and the output from an AC-to-DC converter on separate primary windings. The secondary winding of the transformer is coupled through a rectifier to a storage capacitor. The transformer operates in a fly-back mode whereby energy is discharged into the storage capacitor when the power supplies discontinue charging the transformer. After energy in the transformer is discharged into the storage capacitor, the power supplies are reactivated, recharging the transformer. The separate primary windings of the transformer provide a fast, reliable, low cost means for charging the storage capacitor with multiple power supplies. The AC power source feeding the AC-to-DC converter is detachable allowing the defibrillator to be operated remotely whereby the storage capacitor is charged solely from the internal battery. The charging circuit monitors the output voltage levels of both the battery and the AC-to-DC converter and enables or disables the power supplies in accordance to their ability to charge the storage capacitor within a predetermined amount of time. The energy in the storage capacitor, which is eventually discharged into a patient, is monitored to prevent overcharging.
