    • A dot matrix printer and printing method for being able to print a dot matrix on a printing medium using a plurality of marking elements on a printing head is described. A set of combinations of firing order of the plurality of marking elements is determined as well as a sequence of relative translation movements between the printing medium and the printing head so that all the dots in the dot matrix can be printed by application of each of the set of combinations, and any dot in the dot matrix can be printed by at least a first and a second equivalent marking element from a set of equivalent marking elements. For printing sets of dots in the dot matrix, a first equivalent marking element is selected from the set of equivalent marking elements to print the set of dots as part of a first firing order. If a pre-set number of equivalent marking elements of the set of equivalent marking elements are defective, the printing head is reconfigured so that other sets of at least first and second equivalent marking elements are determined.

    • Photographic sheet material is processed using a processing cell through which the sheet material passes. Process liquid is fed from a collapsible storage container to the cell and returned from the cell to the container. The returning liquid is caused to enter the container as a jet stream. A cap assembly for the container comprises a body releasably connected to an upwardly facing mouth of the container. Inlet and outlet passages pass through the body and the inlet passage opening into the container is provided with a cross-sectional area smaller than that of the outlet passage to enable the jet stream to be achieved. Mixing of the returning process liquid in the container in a simple and economical manner is possible without compromising the ability of the container to collapse.

    • The device comprises a housing (10) having a powder inlet opening (12) in an upper face (13) thereof. A dust shield (14) upstands from the upper face (13) adjacent said powder inlet opening (12). A movable box (16) for accommodating a bag (18) containing powder has an open end (20). Co-operating guides (22, 24) provided respectively on the housing (10) and on the box (16) constrain movement of the box (16) between a first position in which the open end (20) is closed by the dust shield (14) and a second position in which the open end (20) mates with the powder inlet opening (12) to allow powder from the bag (18) to fall through the powder inlet opening (12). Thereby, discharge of the powder contents of a flexible material bag can be achieved in a convenient manner.

    • An imaging element (15, 122) comprising on a lithographic base at least one radiation sensitive or heat-sensitive layer composition, is image-wise exposed to radiation or heat. The composition is such that when exposed and developed, a lithographic surface is formed. The exposed imaging element is then passed through a closed treatment cell (26, 64, 66) in a processing apparatus in which the imaging element is brought into contact with a single developing fluid (44, 124). The closed treatment cell (26; 64, 66) comprises a housing (24; 114) having an entrance (28; 116) and an exit (30; 118) each closed by a path-defining roller (32; 128) in contact with a reaction surface (33; 130) to form a nip (34; 136) therebetween, through which the plate path (36; 72) extends. Sealing means (38; 138, 139) seal each path-defining roller (32; 128) to the housing. Evaporation, oxidation and carbonization of the treatment liquid is significantly reduced and quality control of the plate is possible before mounting on a printing machine.

    • The apparatus comprises a housing (10) defining a treatment vessel (12.sup.2) having entrance and exit openings (16, 20) defining a sheet material path (22) therethrough. The lower opening (20) is closed by a pair of path-defining rollers (28, 26) biased into contact with each other to form a nip (28) through which the sheet material path (22) extends. The housing (10) includes a collecting chamber (50) positioned to collect treatment liquid which in use falls from the treatment vessel (12.sup.2) through one or both of the openings. The collecting chamber (50) is a closed chamber (50) and means (52) are provided to return treatment liquid from the collecting chamber (50) to the treatment vessel (12.sup.2). The construction has the advantage that the wastage of treatment liquid is reduced without requiring the use of complicated and costly sealing devices.
