    • A direct current electrical switching apparatus includes a first contact in electrical communication with first and third arc runners, a second contact in electrical communication with second and fourth arc runners, a movable contact, a first arc chamber including first arc plates having a first width, a second arc chamber including second arc plates having a greater second width, an operating mechanism, and a magnet assembly cooperating with the arc chambers to establish generally oppositely directed magnetic fields. The magnetic fields cause one of a first arc and a second arc to enter one of the arc chambers depending upon a direction of current flow between the contacts. The electrical switching apparatus is rated for a first magnitude of current flowing from the first contact to the second contact and for a greater second magnitude of opposite second current flowing from the second contact to the first contact.

    • A linear acting ball latch is released by a rotary latch release member in the form of a rotor for a high torque, short stroke rotary electric motor which is electrically energized through a capacitor discharge system to release the latched member for spring biased movement into engagement with a bridging contact, thereby forcing the contact open from stationary contacts. A clapper type armature drives the contacts between open and closed positions through tubes, one of which extends through the latch mechanism. The tubes have spring biased plungers connected with the movable contact member to provide a low gradient spring force to the contacts permitting separation by the latch tube assembly and providing contact pressure when the magnetic operator closes the contacts. A manually operable handle and reset cam are disposed over the rotary latch mechanism and have mechanical connection with the latch release rotor to provide for manual operation of the release and for manual resetting of the latch mechanism. The wearable parts and time dated parts are all housed in a powerhead module which is readily detached from a base module and electronics module.

    • An arc extinguishing structure for a circuit breaker (2) wherein an arc chute is provided with a pair of transverse barrier plates (38) spaced apart to provide a centrally located opening (40) and spaced away from an upstanding wall (4a) of the breaker housing (4) so as to direct ionized gases associated with an electric arc drawn between separating contacts (8,20) through the arc plates (36) and central opening (40) against the upstanding wall (4a) thereby to be redirected along the wall (4a) and exhausted to the atmosphere through unrestricted openings (6a,4b) provided at opposite upper and lower ends of the wall.
