    • A brushless generator which is operable in a generating mode to convert motive power into electrical power, and in a starting mode to convert electrical power into motive power includes a set of electrically conductive bars disposed on a rotor of the generator and which are interconnected to form a squirrel cage winding whereby AC power may be provided to a main generator portion armature winding which induces currents in the bars and causes the generator to operate as an induction motor. Circuitry is provided for periodically shorting a main field winding of the generator during operation of the generator in the starting mode to prevent damage thereto.

    • An electrically-compensated constant speed drive according to the present invention includes a speed summer having first and second input shafts and an output shaft at which constant speed motive power is developed wherein the first input shaft is coupled to a prime mover output shaft. A speed-compensating permanent magnet machine includes a motive power shaft coupled to the second input shaft of the speed summer and electrical power windings. A control permanent magnet machine includes a motive power shaft coupled to the output shaft of the speed summer and also includes electrical power windings. A power converter interconnects the power windings of the permanent magnet machines and comprises a first bi-directional AC/DC converter coupled to the electrical power windings of one of the permanent magnet machines, a second bi-directional AC/DC converter coupled to the electrical power windings of the other of the permanent magnet machines, a bi-directional DC/DC converter coupled between the AC/DC converters and a circuit for controlling the converters whereby the speed compensating permanent magnet machine develops compensating speed of a magnitude and direction sufficient to maintain the speed summer output shaft at the desired speed.

    • A control for an AC/DC power converter having first and second switches and which converts an AC voltage supplied by an AC source into a DC voltage on a DC output conductor includes circuitry for developing an error signal representing the deviation of the DC voltage from a desired level and a multiplier coupled to the developing circuitry and responsive to the AC voltage for deriving a reference signal representing a desired current magnitude from the AC source. A current sensor develops a current magnitude signal representing the magnitude of the current from the AC source and a circuitry having a hysteresis characteristic compares the current magnitude signal with the reference signal to obtain a comparison signal. Buffer and interface circuits operable the first and second switches in accordance with the comparison signal to in turn cause the DC voltage to approach the desired level and to cause the current from the AC power source to have a certain phase relationship with respect to the AC voltage supplied thereby.

    • A power conversion system utilizes a brushless generator driven by a prime mover when operating in a generating mode and drives the prime mover when operating in a starting mode. The system includes first and second bidirectional converter/inverter units, each of the bidirectional units being operable as either an AC to DC converter or a DC to AC inverter. A DC link couples the first and second bidirectional units. A transformer is connected to the second unit and the first unit is further connected to the armature windings, the transformer further being connected to the external power source. A control unit is connected to the first and second bidirectional units and causes the first bidirectional unit to operate as a converter and the second bidirectional unit to operate as an inverter when operating in the generating mode, and for causing the first bidirectional unit to operate as an inverter and the second bidirectional unit to operate as a converter when operating in the starting mode.
