    • An improved end cap for encircling the end of a package containing an article such as a bathtub or other articles. The improved end cap is formed as a generally four-sided paper member which has a plurality of first flaps formed around the sides of the paperboard member as well as a plurality of second flaps formed on the first flaps. The first and second flaps are foldable to a position which is generally perpendicular to the position of the four-sided member and are interlocked with each other to add torsional stability to the ends of the package with the first and second flaps also serving as cushions to cushion the article contained in the package.

    • A multiple article carrier production blank designed to be formed into a multiple article carrier of the type containing a plurality of similar and/or different articles is disclosed. The blank may be formed into the multiple article carrier and contains means for forming a stop means in the form of a raised panel out of the side panel and the bottom panel. Formed above the raised panel in the top panel are means for providing an opening in the top panel so that an article can be inserted through the opening to rest on the raised panel formed in the bottom of the carrier. The carrier thus formed may be utilized for packaging at least five articles of a like nature such as oil cans in combination with a sixth article that may be either similar or dissimilar such as another oil can or an oil filter. The opening formed in the top panel in combination with the raised bottom panel allows various size oil filters to be placed in the carrier at the retail store. The raised panel, in combination with tab retainers, assures a tight fit of cans in the raised cell portion of the carrier. The stop means may also be formed out of tabs turned out of the bottom of the carrier. Also disclosed is a new and novel method for packaging a plurality of articles in the multiple cell carrier which allows the customer to select the article to be placed in the raised center cell of the carrier.

    • An improved bulk material container for use in shipping, storing and dispensing bulk materials from the container. The container may be formed of paperboard and contains a new and novel reclosable pouring spout as well as means for incorporating a slide valve in the pouring spout to control the flow of material through the pouring spout whenever the pouring spout is opened. The pouring spout is formed from a plurality of outer, intermediate and swinging doors with the inner swinging doors serving to keep the outer and intermediate doors in a generally horizontal position to allow the contents of the container to be easily removed. The container also has formed thereon new and novel means for reinforcing the container whenever it is used to handle extremely large weights of bulk materials.

    • A water control system for suction rolls generally and couch rolls particularly for a papermaking process of the type wherein water is removed from the wet paper web that has been run around the roll. The improvement comprises forming a surface tension covering around the periphery of the couch roll on at least a portion of the couch roll and providing a water control zone within the couch roll to control the water removed from the paper to the surface tension member and finally varying the pressure within the water control zone so as to be able to directionally control the discharge of water off the couch roll in a predetermined pattern for deposit in the water collecting pan provided in proximity to the couch roll. The water control zone may comprise a three-zone system comprising a water collecting zone, a transfer zone and a release zone with a relatively small vacuum being utilized in the transfer zone in comparison to the magnitude of the vacuum being utilized in the water collecting zone so that the surface tension covering and the vacuum differential coact to cause the water to be held at the surface of the couch roll just prior to the release zone so that it can be released in a controlled pattern. Additionally the water control zone can include a fourth zone which can either be a void zone at atmospheric pressure or a final zone having a vacuum induced therein to assist the surface tension covering in maintaining any residual water at the surface of the couch roll. Also disclosed is a method for improving the removal of water from a traveling paper web by subjecting the web to various induced vacuums from within a rotating couch roll in the papermaking process. The surface tension covering can be for example a wire screen which has a film-forming action with the water and produces a film-like collection of water in its interstices.
