摘要： A frequency and/or time transfer apparatus, including a modulator system is disclosed. The modulator system includes a port for providing a first modulated signal to a remote location via a communication path and for receiving a second modulated signal from the remote location via the communication path. The modulator system is configured in operation to utilise a first modulation signal to produce the first modulated signal, the first modulated signal comprising the first modulation signal imprinted onto a first carrier signal, and to provide a reverse modulation for the second modulated signal. The first modulation signal is periodic. There exists a reversing modulation signal which reverses and is reversed by the first modulation signal.

摘要： Reflectarray antenna elements, reflectarrays, and a method of operating an antenna element are described. A reflectarray antenna element includes a patch (14) of electrically conductive material for reflecting an electromagnetic field; a dielectric substrate (12) providing an RF ground; first and second phase control lines (16, 18) of electrically conductive material arranged to interact with electromagnetic radiation with a first polarisation; a first binary switching device (24) having an ON or OFF state disposed between the patch and ground, and configured to selectively electrically couple the patch to ground via the first phase control line; a second binary switching device (26) having an ON or OFF state disposed between the patch and ground, and configured to selectively electrically couple the patch to ground via the second phase control line; a single DC bias input electrically coupled to the patch and configurable to different discrete voltage levels for selectively controlling the states of the switching devices. Selective operation of the first and second binary switching devices occurs by means of the DC bias input provides phase control of electromagnetic radiation dependent on the state of the switching devices. Described is a phase control mechanism of unit cells to enable a reconfigurable/smart reflectarray platform.

The device also includes a vapor cell to receive the collimated first VCSEL radiation and the collimated second VCSEL radiation and to provide an output beam as a function of the received collimated first VCSEL radiation and collimated second VCSEL radiation, and measurement circuitry to analyze the output beam provided by the vapor cell.

摘要： A method for making a fiber electrically conductive comprises the steps of: (a) providing a fiber having a negative electric charge at the surface of the fiber, (b) applying to the fiber a substance (such as a polyelectrolyte) which provides a layer of said substance on the fiber and changes the electric charge at the surface of the fiber from negative to positive, wherein said substance is not chitosan, and (c) making the surface of the fiber electrically conductive with a metal, wherein the metal of step (c) is provided in the form of metal ions and wherein a reducing agent (for example) is employed to reduce the metal ions to elemental metal. 摘要： Marking apparatus for marking tissue imaged through an imaging device including a viewing element in the form of a spacer having an imaging window which provides an imaging zone through which tissue can be imaged by an imaging probe. The apparatus can include a marker implement connected to a coupling device. In some embodiments, the coupling device is configurable to position the marker implement in a first position substantially out of the imaging window and a second position in the imaging zone of the imaging window. The marker implement can apply a mark when in the second position and thereby to tissue in the imaging zone while the apparatus remains in the imaging position on the tissue. The spacer can be length adjustable in order to change the depth of focus of the imaging probe, thereby to focus at different depths within a patient's skin.

摘要： Alignment features for an optical fibre assembly are formed directly into an ion trap chip to align an optical module with respect to the ion trap chip. This is achieved using microfabrication techniques to etch alignment elements into the surface of the ion trap chip, advantageously carried out with lithographic precision achieving the alignment accuracy required of the optical beam geometries for the application, with an alignment accuracy of a few micrometres. The alignment elements are advantageously etched along defined crystal planes of the silicon substrate of the chip. An external microstructure can be micromachined with lithographic precision to contain locating features that will fit, or “plug”, into the recesses of the chip, for instance ion microtrap chip.

The method comprises receiving image data of a body part, the image data including thermal image data, the thermal image data including thermal image data of the body part and background thermal image data, applying a classifier to the image data to detect a profile of the body part, the classifier being configured to use image data other than the thermal image data to perform the detection, generating a mask from said profile, and applying the mask to the thermal image data to remove the background thermal image data and obtain thermal image data of the body part.
