    • A sound attenuating apparatus for mounting on a heat exchanging apparatus such as a cooling tower, this apparatus having an attenuator housing with vertically extending sides, a top cover and a bottom adapted for mounting on the tower. There is an annular air inlet in the bottom and an air outlet is formed in at least one of the sidewalls. Perforated interior walls are mounted in the housing and define an /airflow passageway that extends from the air inlet to the air outlet. These walls include a first annular wall section extending about and defining an outer circumferential portion of the airflow passageway and a second wall section with that is annular and extends about a substantially vertical central axis. The latter wall section defines an inner circumferential portion of the passageway. The second wall section extends generally upwardly and outwardly from the air inlet. Sound absorbing material is arranged behind the perforated walls.

    • Both air duct inlet silencers and air duct outlet silencers for use with a stationary gas turbine are disclosed. The sound attenuating duct unit suitable for connecting to an outlet of a stationary gas turbine includes a housing having a horizontal housing section and a vertical housing section and having sidewalls surrounding a main airflow passageway that extends along a substantial bend. An air inlet is located at one end of the horizontal housing section and is adapted for connection to the outlet of the gas turbine. Preferably two air outlets are located proximate to an upper end of the vertical housing section. Splitters are mounted in the housing, and they divide sections of the main airflow passageway into smaller air passageways. At least one of the splitters is positioned upstream in the main airflow passageway relative to other splitters. The splitters contain sound attenuating material capable of withstanding airflow temperatures in the main airflow passageway of at least 500 degrees Celsius. At least a substantial portion of both the sidewalls surrounding the main airflow passageway and metal sidewalls forming the splitters are made of perforated sheet metal.

    • An air handling system for use in a building is used in combination with an elevated floor assembly for mounting on a principal floor of the building, this assembly including a working area floor which lies above the principal floor so as to provide an air plenum between the two floors. An outlet attenuator is mounted on the principal floor and extends upwardly through the working area floor, this attenuator including an exterior outlet housing having an air inlet at the top and a lowermost air outlet in at least one vertical side thereof. The air outlet is connected to the air plenum and is connected to the air inlet by a lower airflow passageway defined by interior walls. This attenuator includes sound absorbing material contained in the housing. An axial or centrifugal fan unit is mounted above the outlet attenuator and provides a downward flow of air to the outlet attenuator. There is also an inlet attenuator section mounted above the fan unit and extending upwardly to a ceiling of the building. The inlet attenuator has an exterior housing with an upper air inlet and a circular bottom air outlet. The inlet attenuator in one preferred embodiment includes an elongate airflow member mounted centrally in the airflow passageway that extends between the air inlet and air outlet. In another version, the inlet attenuator has its airflow passageway divided into two passageways by a conical divider wall.

    • An air mixer for an air distribution system for a building includes a set of fixed, substantially parallel partitions arranged in a spaced-apart, side-by-side manner, these partitions forming alternating primary and secondary air passageways. The primary air passageways are open-ended and extend from a front side to a rear side of the mixer. Front end plates extend respectively across front sides of the secondary air passageways and each has elongate edge portions extending along two opposite longitudinal edges thereof. Each elongate edge portion projects beyond the plane defined by an adjacent one of the partitions. Air flow splitters are mounted in the secondary air passageways and each is connected to an adjacent pair of the partitions. These splitters in operation of the mixer turn incoming air flow that enters the secondary air passageways towards the front end plates. Air gaps are formed between the elongate edge portions and front edges of the partitions to enable the air flow in the secondary air passageways to enter the primary passageways where the two air flows are mixed.

    • Duct units for delivery of air to an air supply fan and for connecting this fan to an air heater unit are disclosed. The duct unit for delivering air in one version has a narrow first section, a second, transition-type section and a wide sound attenuating, third section with these three sections extending generally vertically. Spaced apart splitters containing sound attenuating material and having side walls of perforated metal are mounted in the third section. The splitters include a central splitter and outer splitters with the latter converging inwardly towards a central axis of the third section. This duct unit also has an elbow-shaped duct section connected to the third section at its upstream end and connectible to the fan at its downstream end. In another version, the duct unit has a single, elongate splitter that extends longitudinally along at least a major portion of a second duct section and that bends through a smooth curve. The outlet duct apparatus has an elbow section of duct that bends through a smooth curve and an elongate second section connected to the elbow section. An elongate turning vane is mounted in the outlet duct and has a substantially curved first vane section and a second vane section that extends substantially upwardly.

    • An air duct silencer can be used at the inlet of an air supply fan unit for a building or other large structure. The silencer has an exterior housing with exterior walls forming outer surfaces of the housing and interior walls arranged in the housing, connected to the exterior walls and defining an annular airflow passageway extending between an air inlet located at one end and a circular air outlet adapted for connection to the fan unit. The outlet defines a primary central axis extending through the center of the outlet and perpendicular to a plane in which the outlet lies. A central airflow defining member has a second central axis extending from an outer end thereof to an inner end and this axis is substantially coaxial with the primary central axis. This airflow defining member is substantially circular in transverse cross-section along its length and has a relatively wide bulb like end section at its outer end and a narrow end section at the inner end. There is sound absorbing material in the housing which is covered by the interior walls and also in the airflow defining member. The transverse cross-section of the airflow defining member causes the air velocity to be substantially higher at the air outlet than at the inlet.
