    • A modular jack for tubular enclosures including an elongate housing formed of dielectric material having a front end, a rear end and a body extending longitudinally between the front and rear ends, at least a portion of the body having a longitudinally extending cylindrical outer surface defining an outer cylindrical boundary envelope of the jack. The body includes a forward body portion adjacent the front end having a longitudinally extending side wall with outer and inner surfaces and a rearward body portion adjacent the rear end having an outer surface. The inner surfaces define a plug-receiving receptacle. The jack also includes a plurality of elongate contact/terminal members formed of conductive material, each contact/terminal member including a contact portion extending through the plug-receiving receptacle, a terminal portion mounted in the rearward body, and an intermediate bridging portion. The contact/terminal members are in their entirety recessed inwardly within the outer cylindrical boundary envelope of the jack.

    • The new modular jack is mounted to a PC board to overlie an LED on this board. The jack includes a light pipe having a light-entry zone in its bottom surface, a first light reflection zone in its rear surface, a light indicator zone in its front surface and a longitudinal axis in the rear-to-front direction. The light pipe further includes in its top surface a second light reflection zone situated forward of the first light reflection zone, the first and second light reflection zones positioned to receive light from the LED and to reflect same forward to the light indicator zone which is visible at the front of the jack.

    • A connector assembly for surface mounting on a substrate including a jack and an optional shield surrounding the jack. The jack includes a housing defining a plug-receiving receptacle, contact/terminal members having a contact portion situated in the receptacle, a terminal portion extending from the housing and adapted to be surface mounted to the substrate, and an intermediate portion between the contact portion and the terminal portion. The intermediate portions of the contact/terminals members are retained or entrapped in the housing in fixed positions such that the terminal portions of the contact/terminals members extend downward and rearward from the housing in a common plane. To this end, the housing includes channels in which the intermediate portions of the contact/terminal members are placed such that the terminal portions extend from the channels at an angle to a bottom surface of the housing. Each intermediate portion has a first surface contacting a surface of the inner or outer housing part at a first location and a second surface opposite to the first surface contacting a surface of the other of the inner and outer housing parts at a second location.

    • An electrical connector assembly adapted to be mounted on a substrate having a ground region including a jack defining a plug-receiving receptacle, at least one contact having a contact portion situated in the receptacle, a shield surrounding at least a portion of the jack and a shorting bar arranged in electrical connection with the contact(s) for discharging static charge from a plug upon its insertion into the receptacle and contact between the plug and the contact(s). The shorting bar is arranged in a channel in an outer housing part of the jack and in engagement with end portions of contacts received in slots in a comb portion of the outer housing part. The shield is adapted to be connected to the ground region of the substrate whereby the shorting bar is electrically connected to the shield. In use, prior to insertion of a mating plug into the receptacle, the end portions of the contacts engage the shorting bar and as the plug is inserted into the receptacle, static charge built up on the cable to which the plug is connected is transmitted through contacts to the shorting bar, from the shorting bar to the shield and from the shield to the ground on the printed circuit board on which the connector assembly is mounted.
