    • A drop sensor for an ink jet printer for determining the two-dimensional position of an ink drop as it flies through the sensor. A plurality of light emitting elements emit light beams which cross in pairs in the space defined by the sensor. A plurality of light receiving elements are aligned to receive the light beams projected from specific light emitting elements and to generate signals having magnitudes proportional to the intensities of the light received by the light receiving elements. A plurality of differential amplifier circuits compare the outputs of adjacent light receiving elements to determine whether an ink drop is coincident with selected matrix points within the sensor.

    • An ink particle jetting device for a multi-nozzle ink jet printer in which a plurality of silicon chips having nozzle arrays formed therein are mounted on a substrate having a plurality of holes therein with the nozzle arrays confronting the holes of the substrate. The substrate is preferably rectangularly shaped having rectangular holes parallel to one another and inclined with respect to the sides of the substrate. Two nozzles may confront each hole of the substrate. The two nozzles which confront a single hole in the substrate may fall along a line on the chip parallel to the sides of the chip or be inclined with respect to the sides. If desired, the sides of the adjacent chips may be cut to provide a high density arrangement.

    • An original attacker which has set a computer as a springboard is detected by detecting a source of a virus or a DNS attack linked to an application, which attacks other computers. A source detection device for detecting a source of a virus or a DNS attack captures packets from a network under setting conditions, and extracts required information. The source detection device stores data such as information concerning behaviors and/or features of viruses and/or DNS attacks, and/or logs of respective servers, which are required for an application traceback. Linkage of a virus or a DNS attack is determined from an application traceback processing result stored in a database and from various data, and new conditions are set accordingly. Under the new conditions, source detection is carried out for a virus or a DNS attack. Data is updated and accumulated accordingly, and linkage and a relationship between a behavior of an attack and a virus or a DNS attack is determined, thereby to detect a source of the attack.

    • In a communication network wherein a control station sends a communication test command once in each test cycle through a transmission path to a local station which sends a response signal back to the control station while kept in normal operation, the local station sends first and second response messages as the response signal while rendered idle and busy, respectively. Supplied with the first and the second response messages in one test cycle, the control station sends the communication test command to the local station in an immediately subsequent test cycle a normal and a longer test interval later, respectively. If supplied with no response signal, the control station sends the communication test command in the subsequent test cycle a shorter interval later and uses a shorter interval than a normal monitor interval in the subsequent test cycle in monitoring whether or not the response signal is received in response to the communication test command transmitted in this test cycle to the local station from which no response signal is received in the above-mentioned one test cycle. Usually, the local station is one of a plurality of local stations connected to the control station through the transmission path.

    • A deflecting electrode assembly for deflecting parallel trains of ink droplets in a multi-nozzle ink jet printer has upper and lower deflecting electrodes oriented parallel to the direction of travel of the trains of ink droplets. The electrodes are equal in width, and the distances between each side edge of the lower deflecting electrode and the outermost train of ink droplets closest thereto are equal. These distances are at least 41/2 times the distance between the adjacent trains of ink droplets. In addition, the upper and lower deflecting electrodes are separated by a distance between 1 and 2 mm. Such a deflecting electrode assembly creates an electrostatic shield effect which reduces the electrostatic mutual action of the ink droplets, thereby resulting in an improved print position on a recording sheet.

    • An ink jet printer in which ink particles separated from an ink jet at positions shifted from the normal charging electrode position are maintained charged at all times thereby preventing the separated particles from reaching the recording medium and being displaced thereon as moise. Auxiliary charging electrodes are provided adjacent the charging electrodes which control the charging of the ink particles according to a printing signal. The auxiliary charging electrodes can be provided as first and second sets of electrodes disposed on either side of the charging electrodes or as a continuous set of plates running from a position near the nozzles past the charging electrodes.
