    • A trigger device for a heat pack comprises three helically-coiled, resilient metallic filaments (1,2,3) nested one within the other and of inwardly decreasing diameter, the filament (2) being wound in a sense opposite to that of filaments (1) and (3). Flexing the assembly of nested helices about its longitudinal axes produces a rubbing action action between adjacent turns thereof which initiates crystallization. Other devices comprises two nested helices wound in the same sense; a single helix having a pressure plate at one end and an external or internal cap at the other; and a body of randomly convoluted or woven metallic filament.

    • A sonic well logging system and apparatus for determination of seismic wave velocities from a seismic wave propagating in a subterranean formation about a wellbore. The system includes the process of imparting a seismic wave into the subterranean formation about the wellbore, and receiving the seismic wave after it has interacted with the subterranean formation at a plurality of semismic receivers positioned in the wellbore. The seismic waves are transformed at each of the seismic receivers into a seismic signal and these signals nonlinearly staked for a selected position in the wellbore to generate a velocity spectrum of seismic wave velocities. Coherency peaks are then selected from the velocity spectrum with each coherency peak having associated therewith a unique seismic wave velocity, such as P-wave, S-wave, tube wave and the like.

    • A simulated solid fuel effect gas fire comprising two elongate simulated solid fuel elements in the form of logs, with a partially aerated gas burner arranged in front of and below each log with respect to the front of the fire. Thus, in use, the flames from the burners engage a lower front portion of the logs, the flames then passing around the front of the logs. By this arrangement the lower front regions of the logs are heated to glow as radiants and the flames subsequently lick around the front of the logs as yellow flames, in accord with the visual effect of a real fire, complete combustion having been attained in the ambient atmosphere in front of the logs to thus form the yellow flames. By the provision of nodules by virtue of a bark pattern on the upper front portion of the logs, the flames heat the nodules to red heat and enhance both the radiant heat derived from the fire and the visual effect of the fire.

    • A gas fire appliance having a casing with a rear face at which a plurality of alumina flame effect burner tubes are supported, the tubes extending through a ceramic deflector plate supported over the rear face and lying behind a solid fuel simulating element which is relatively steeply raked to be visible through an adjacent front glass panel of the appliance. A dual-section main heater burner with a pair of metallic flame effect burners secured to one side thereof is positioned below the solid fuel simulating element, the flames therefrom being deflected upwardly by the plate. A gas control knob is operable to turn on all the burners or to select various ones thereof only as required. The steep rake of the fuel bed ensures that the visual appearance of the appliance is enhanced by fully presenting the working area and the alumina burner tubes positioned in the high temperature fuel bed ensure an effective living flame effect of high efficiency.
