    • An electric motor operated by AC current, that includes a stator and a rotor supported for rotation about an axis relative to the stator. The stator is provided with field windings angularly distributed about the rotor axis and capable of producing a magnetic field vector in the space of the rotor. Circuitry delivers AC current to the windings in a manner that produces an AC magnetic field vector that moves around the axis of the rotor. The rotor has a construction, such as an axially extending conductive loop, that changes its reluctance in the AC magnetic field depending on its orientation to the AC magnetic field vector whereby the rotor is caused to rotate in synchronization with the movement of the AC magnetic field vector.

    • A solenoid operable from an alternating voltage source is disclosed and the solenoid may actuate a fluid valve with the fluid of the valve wetting the movable armature inside a barrel. The barrel is sealed against fluid leakage at all places except the axial end connected to the valve. A frame is coaxial with the barrel and encloses an electrical coil. A magnetically permeable core is inside the barrel and fixed relative to the frame and this core carries a first pole piece. A second pole piece is on the movable armature for cooperation with the first pole piece. The electrical coil is energized with rectified voltage from the alternating voltage source and this together with the shape of the pole pieces establishes a controlledsaturation of these pole pieces in a range of positions of the armature. This saturation of the pole pieces is established so that the saturation decreases as the armature moves from a first extended position toward a second closed position. This changeable saturation of the pole pieces permits the stroke versus force curve of the solenoid to be improved in comparison to the prior art.

    • A constant speed hydrostatic drive system is disclosed wherein a generator drive shaft is maintained at a constant speed by utilizing an electro-hydraulic controlled displacement pump responsive to a pressure transducer to control a hydraulic motor. A speed sensor is used to produce a direct current signal responsive to the drive shaft speed. The signal is converted into a series of voltage pulses also responsive to the shaft speed which are compared to a speed reference signal to provide a speed error signal. A loop gain control means is provided to utilize said speed error signal to adjust the shaft speed to coincide with said reference signal. A timing reference and digital trim control are also provided to compensate for long term drifting in the type speed control circuit described above.

    • A method and an apparatus are described for constructing a compact inductive-capacitive circuit, using a spiral inductor of more than one turn, plus a capacitive plate. This method includes duplicating the layout of the spiral, and then offsetting the duplicate so that the trace pattern of the spiral overlaps its duplicate at an insulating distance away, with the duplicate as an underlying capacitive plate. The plate's trace pattern includes at least one gap, plus an extension of its trace to span the region under the terminals of the spiral inductor. For the case where the spiral inductor has more than one turn—plus an underpass—the capacitive plate may also have more than one turn and may also have an underpass. The resulting pair of underpasses may be either overlapping or nonoverlapping. If overlapping, the full circuit requires at least four metal layers, and at least three if the underpasses are nonoverlapping.
