    • A data recording apparatus records data onto a recording medium having a flash memory in which data can be written in block units using a part of a recording region as an alternative block for a defect block in which normal data writing cannot be performed. The data recording apparatus causes a user to select one of plural recording modes including a first recording mode and a second recording mode in which an amount of data to be processed is larger than that of the first recording mode, then obtains data in the selected recording mode and stores the data onto the recording medium. If an alternative block remaining amount obtained from the recording medium is equal to or less than a threshold value, the data recording apparatus allows recording in the first recording mode and inhibits recording in the second recording mode.

    • A positioning structure having a positioning projection on attaching surface is provided.     • A method of forming a plurality of horizontal barriers in situ at a preselected depth beneath the soil surface and in a plane substantially parallel to the soil surface so as to be coextensive with a desired area, the barriers being made of a thermoplastic material such as asphalt for example, and forming further barriers joined to the horizontal barriers and extending vertically or obliquely toward the soil surface in order to surround the above-mentioned area, thereby improving soil having a poor water retention property. The method further comprises the steps of filling up chambers in a plow moving in the soil with the barrier forming material in the liquid form, leaking the material out of the chambers through passages of a given gap, and spreading the formed film laterally uniform by an ironing portion connected with the plow near the passages so as to render the formed water barrier uniform in thickness and free from apertures.

    • For splitting rock, concrete structures, etc., by being inserted into a drill hole created therein, a rock splitter has a wedge coupled at its thick end to the output shaft of a hydraulic cylinder. Lying on opposite sides of the wedge, a pair of guides are yieldably held against the wedge to allow longitudinal sliding motion thereof. Two pairs of opposed leaf springs connect the wedge guides to the hydraulic cylinder to restrain the guides from longitudinal displacement and to allow same to move away from and toward each other with the longitudinal sliding motion of the wedge. The pair of wedge guides, together with the wedge therebetween, generally taper as they extend away from the hydraulic cylinder for the ease of insertion into the drill hole. Several splitting operations, each with a thrust of the wedge, are to be performed in succession, by inserting the splitter progressively deeper into the drill hole, for fracturing thick rock formations or the like.
