    • The present invention provides an optical receiver operable for optical signals each having different transmission speed. The optical receiver includes a light-receiving device, a pre-amplifier, a main amplifier, and a control circuit. The pre-amplifier, may be a trans-impedance amplifier, includes a parallel connection of a switching device and a resistor in a trans-impedance or a load element. By switching ON/OFF the switching device, the gain and the bandwidth of the pre-amplifier may be changed. By providing a filter circuit, whose cut-off frequency may be switched, in the main amplifier, the bandwidth of the optical receiver may be varied.

    • The invention provides an optical transmitter that prevents the high frequency components in the driving signal from leaking to the external power supply in a wider frequency range. The transmitter provides a shun driving configuration with a switching transistor connected in parallel to the laser diode and a load transistor connected in serial to the parallel circuit of the switching transistor and the laser diode. The load transistor operates in the common base configuration, or the common gate configuration, by which the input impedance viewed from the laser diode becomes large, while, the output impedance viewed from the external power source becomes small. Thus, the high frequency components in the driving signal applied to the switching transistor can be suppresses to appear in the external power source.

    • An optical receiver implemented with a pre-amplifier with an additional trans-impedance able to respond to the input signal in bit-by-bit is disclosed. The optical receiver provides a photodiode to convert an optical signal into a photocurrent, a trans-impedance amplifier to convert the photocurrent to a voltage signal, and an additional trans-impedance circuit able to respond instantaneously to the voltage signal. The additional trans-impedance includes a FET whose gate is fully fixedly biased and the source thereof receives the voltage signal. The FET may bypass the current flowing in the intrinsic trans-impedance instantaneously.

    • The present invention is to provide a laser driver able to select configurations for the high speed application and for the lower speed and the lower power dissipation. The laser driver of the present invention provides a pair of transistors with the differential configuration whose outputs are complementary to each other, and a pair of load circuits connected between respective outputs of the paired transistor and the power supply line. Two outputs of the paired transistor are also connected to the anode and cathode of the laser diode and two load circuits each includes a switch to isolate the output of the transistor from the power supply line to vary the output impedance of the laser driver.
