    • Apparatus and Method for Channel Request in a Wireless Communication System. The present invention provides a method to request channels in a wireless communication system in order to efficiently allocate channel resources by using channel function information about each transceiver. A method is provided in a wireless communication system which includes a communication link having a plurality of channels and a plurality of radio heads each having transceivers for connecting to mobile terminals. The method comprises defining a channel function for a transceiver of one of the radio heads, determining whether the transceiver requires a dedicated channel for the channel function, and, if the transceiver requires the dedicated channel for the channel function, requesting a channel for the transceiver. In another embodiment, the method further comprises determining if a channel on the communication link is available for the channel function, and, if a channel is available for the transceiver, assigning the channel to the transceiver.

    • The selection of the primary control signal bus to use for a given radio head is based on propagation delay to the relevant radio head. A plurality of radio heads are cascaded in a chain with buffered error correction therebetween. At least first and second control interfaces connect to the chain and supply control information thereto via respective control signal busses, which may be virtual busses. The propagation delay from a first control interface to a first radio head over a first bus is determined. Likewise, the propagation delay from a second control interface to the first radio head over a second bus is determined. Thereafter, the radio head determines which control signal bus to select as its primary control signal bus based on the respective propagation delays between the first radio head and the first and second control interfaces.

    • A method and apparatus for providing timing information to radio heads in a wireless communications system. One or more radio heads are connected to a central unit by a respective cable. This cable includes at least two sets of conductors. The first set carries communication data between the central unit and the radio head. This communication data may be user data, such as voice, data, or fax data, and optionally control data. This communication data is transferred between the radio head and the central unit using an asynchronous transmit method. Due to its variable timing of successful receipt, it may be difficult to send highly accurate timing data via asynchronous transmit methods. Instead, a synchronous transmit method may be advantageously employed to send timing data in the present invention. The timing data is sent on the second set of conductors of the same cable using a synchronous transmit method. Thus, each cable of the present invention carries both asynchronous transmissions and synchronous transmissions. The cable may advantageously be a portion of an existing LAN cable plant, and the asynchronous transmit method may be according to an Ethernet protocol. One or more radio heads may be supplied with timing data in this fashion. The timing of radio frequency transmissions from those radio heads may then be based on the supplied timing information, for instance to coordinate the transmissions from multiple radio heads so as to be simultaneous.
