    • A low-profile multilayer cushion assembly which can be used to support the human body under various conditions. The cushion assembly generally includes a top layer of supportive material having a relatively high compression modulus, a middle layer of woven material, and a bottom layer. The bottom layer includes a matrix of supportive material having a relatively low compression modulus and an arrangement of inserts spread throughout the matrix having a relatively high compression modulus. In the preferred embodiment closed-cell polyurethane foam is used for the top layer and inserts, and open-cell polyurethane foam is used for the bottom layer matrix. The inserts are adhesively attached to the matrix to provide additional resistance to buckling. An optional protective cover encases the bottom layer, middle layer, and top layer.

    • In a polishing configuration wherein a polishing material or slurry is applied to a surface of a rotating polishing pad and a product material mounted on a rotating carrier is moved into contact with the polishing material or slurry, the flow of the polishing material or slurry over the surface can be improved by fabricating spiral grooves or channels in the surface of the polishing pad and by mounting the product material is a cavity of the carrier, the cavity having grooves or channels in the side walls to provide a uniform flow over the product material. The angle between the spiral grooves or channels on the polishing pad and a diameter about the axis of rotation should be approximately 40.degree.. The spiral grooves or channels on the polishing pad can be combined with concentric grooves or channels to further improve the flow of polishing material. Similarly, the grooves or channels in the rotating carrier provide further uniformity for the interaction of the polishing material and the product material. As with the grooves or channels in the polishing pad, the grooves or channels in the side walls of the carrier cavity have an optimum angle of 40.degree. with respect to the diameter, centered on the axis of rotation of the carrier, passing through the groove or channel.

    • A security bar for securely holding in a closed position a horizontally sliding door, such as a so-called patio door, for example, or a horizontally or vertically sliding window. The security bar of the invention consists of a massive metallic or plastic bar member, preferably square or rectangular in cross-section, pivotally supported at one end by means of a bracket from an inoperative position to an operative position wherein the free end of the bar member is supported by a clip with the longitudinal axis of the bar member substantially orthogonal to the rear edge of the frame of the sliding door or window and to a fixed structural surface such as the door or window jamb. Both ends of the bar member are formed with a curvilinear or cylindrical surface providing line engagement with the surfaces held apart by the bar member, such that any load resulting from an attempt to slide open the door or window is applied directly to the bar member in compression and not as a shear force applied through intermediary fastening members such as pivot pins or the like. When in an inoperative position, the bar member is held out of the way by a clip fastened to the same surface as the pivot support bracket.
