Two frames are hingeably coupled with each other at a pivot point, by which the two frames are transitionable between a coplanar configuration and a non-coplanar configuration. Two frames are also coupled by a counterbalance mechanism, which couples one frame to a lower member of the other frame such that the counterbalance mechanism does not extend beyond a front-most surface of the other frame. The foldout bed also has two panels, each of which couples with one of the two frames, respectively. The distance between two panels forms a gap that is sized and dimensioned to allow the two frames to transition between the coplanar and non-coplanar configuration without encumbrance. The gap is covered by a gap cover.

Each face has two side rails for enclosing an area for placing a mattress. The rails are dimensionally asymmetrical such that one of the faces has a smaller rail height/depth than the adjacent rail on the other face. The shorter rail height is smaller than the thickness of the mattress, thus allowing a user to comfortably sit on the edge of the mattress. The taller rail height is larger than the thickness of the mattress and provides a headboard.

When the cabinet is closed, a space within the cabinet stores a foldable innerspring, or other mattress. The two faces can be locked together in the folded position. During deployment, an elastic belt or other retainer and hold the folded mattress to one of the faces, and can also pull the mattress out of the interior space within the bottom of the cabinet. The cabinet also has legs for supporting the faces above the ground when in the opened configuration, and can include wheels that facilitate moving the cabinet quickly and easily moved.

摘要： A foldout bed is described. The foldout bed has a left side wall, a right side wall, and a top panel that extends between and attached to the top ends of the two side walls. The bottom end of each side wall is coupled with a counterbalance mechanism. A bed tray is pivotally coupled with a the counterbalance mechanisms and is transitionable between an open configuration and a closed configuration. The bed tray provides a unitary planar surface that is configured to support a mattress and a person when in the open configuration. Each counterbalance mechanism has a frame and a piston that attaches the frame to the bed tray. The frame has a base flange disposed perpendicular to the side walls and located at the bottommost end of the counterbalance mechanism against a base plate of the wall.
