    • A photo-voltaic (PV) power generating system and a control system for PV array string-level control and PV modules serially-connected into strings of PV modules. The system includes plural parallel strings of serially-connected power-generating photovoltaic modules that form a PV array, DC/DC micro-converters that are coupled to a DC voltage buss and to the output of a corresponding photovoltaic module or to the output of a string of photovoltaic modules; a gating or central inverter; and a control system. The control system is structured and arranged to control and manage each string of photovoltaic modules, to ensure that power delivered by the photovoltaic power generating system is not affected by photovoltaic modules or strings of photovoltaic modules that are not operating at maximum power transfer efficiency.

    • A static voltage regulator consists of a booster transformer, a regulator transformer, an electronic switching system and a control system. The booster transformer includes a booster primary winding and a booster secondary winding. The booster secondary is provided in series with the input and output terminals of the regulator so as to produce an output voltage. The regulator transformer includes a regulator primary winding and a regulator secondary winding. The regulator primary is electrically coupled to the output. The electronic switching system is coupled between the regulator secondary and the booster primary for providing a voltage to the booster primary. The control system includes a voltage sensor for sensing a voltage at the input, and a gating system coupled to the switching system for switching the output voltage in response to changes in the sensed input voltage. The voltage regulator also includes a notch filter coupled to the booster transformer for reducing transients induced in the booster transformer when the output voltage is switched.

    • A static transfer switch for reducing ferroresonance in a load consisting of a first switch for connecting and disconnecting a primary power source to and from the load, and a second switch for connecting and disconnecting a secondary power source to and from the load. Each switch includes a snubber circuit connected across the respective switch. An attenuator, consisting of a resistor in series with a capacitor, is connected between the first and second switches and ground and suppresses series ferroresonance at the load by reducing the voltage applied to the load when both the first and second switches are open and power is applied to or removed from the load.

    • An electric arc furnace includes a container for receiving metal, an electrode spaced apart from the container, and an electrical power source coupled to the electrode and the container for generating an electrical discharge between the electrode and the container for melting the metal in the container. The arc furnace includes a flicker controller for reducing flicker induced in the power source by the electric arc furnace. The flicker controller consists of a switch electrically connected between the power source and the electrode, and a control system coupled to the switch. The switch includes a gating input for controlling a conduction interval of the switch, and the control system applies gating signals to the gating input for maintaining a magnitude of reactive current flow through the arc furnace substantially constant.
