    • A sectional garage door is formed of rectangular door sections which include hollow extruded plastic rail members interconnected by hollow extruded plastic end and intermediate stile members to form a door section. The rail members and stile members may be fitted with internal tubular or channel shaped metal reinforcing members to minimize deflection of the door sections during use. The door sections may each include an externally fitted strut which is secured to a longitudinal side edge of a section and is connected directly to a reinforcing member disposed within one of the rail members without being forcibly connected to the rail member itself to allow for differential thermal expansion between the rail member and the reinforcing members. Rectangular panel inserts may be removably supported on each door section by removable retainer members and may include insulated panel inserts which may be added to the door sections before or after installation.

    • A vehicle restraining apparatus is disclosed which is adapted to be disposed adjacent a fixed structure, such as a loading dock, for securing a vehicle adjacent the fixed structure. In a typical application, the apparatus is disposed adjacent a loading dock for restraining trucks which are backed into a position adjacent the dock during loading and unloading operations. The apparatus includes an articulated structure adapted to be deployed in a vehicle-engaging position adjacent an upright surface of the dock for engaging an adjacent vehicle. The articulated structure includes upper and lower vertically aligned pivot arms, and an actuator is provided for pivoting the upper arm upwardly in a first pivotal direction about a pivot axis substantially perpendicular to the upright surface, and pivoting the lower arm, about a second pivot axis spaced from the first axis, in a second, opposite pivotal direction, the distal end portion of the upper arm being thereby brought into engagement with a structural portion of the vehicle. In a preferred embodiment, a keeper member is mounted on the distal end portion of the upper pivot arm, the keeper member being positioned to seat in front of a horizontally-extending structural member of a vehicle, for securing the vehicle. In a preferred embodiment, the pivot arms of the articulated structure are pivotable about respectively different pivot axes extending substantially horizontally, for maintaining the keeper member in a vertical orientation. In one embodiment, a fluid operated system is provided for retracting the articulated structure.

    • A sectional garage door panel includes a skin part formed of a rolled metal sheet forming an outer wall and opposed top and bottom edges which may form a pinch resistant joint when adjacent panels are interconnected. Elongated prefabricated insulation parts are inserted in cavities formed by the top and bottom edges and a generally rectangular planar insulation part is insertable in a cavity formed between the top and bottom edges and between the first mentioned insulation parts. Channel shaped brackets are insertable in cavities formed by the top and bottom edges for reinforcing the skin part at a point of attachment of end stiles and hinge parts. A metal backer sheet forms an inner wall to protect the insulation parts. The brackets and one or more of the insulation parts may be secured to the skin part by an adhesive.

    • An upward acting sectional door is formed of rectangular door sections which are interconnected to each other by a continuous hinge comprising opposed partial arcuate hinge members formed on a lower rail of an upper section and an upper rail of an adjacent lower section and engaged with a third hinge member comprising an elongated tubular pin having a D-shaped cross section. The hinge pin is secured against rotation by retainer members at opposite ends of one of the door sections. The hinge permits lateral assembly and disassembly of one door section relative to the other. Additional load bearing hinge members are provided connected to the lateral side edges of adjacent door sections and are interconnected by support members disposed in the tubular hinge pin for transferring part or all of the forces between adjacent door sections thereby allowing the arcuate hinge members to function substantially as cooperating light and weatherseal members and to provide a substantially pinch proof door.

    • Vertically opening sectional doors, such as residential garage doors, are reinforced against high wind loads in their closed positions by a set of reinforcing and locking pin receiving tubes supported on each sectional panel and aligned with each other. Each receiving tube supports a door reinforcing pin or bolt in a retracted position by a removable retaining pin. The retaining pins may be released to allow the reinforcing pins to partially extend from one tube into an adjacent tube on an adjacent door section to prevent pivotal movement of door sections relative to each other. A top wall bracket adjacent the upper horizontal edge of the door includes a member engageable with the door edge and a pair of links connected to one of the pin receiving tubes to retain the top edge of the door from displacement away from the door opening and to prevent opening movement of the door during high wind loads imposed thereon. The lowermost pin support tube includes a pin operable to extend from the lower edge of the door into a recess formed in the building floor to lock the bottom edge of the door against displacement away from the door opening. The door locking and reinforcing mechanism may be provided as original equipment on new doors, or as a kit for retrofitting existing doors.
