    • A method to detect the relative position of a drill bit with respect to a coal seam boundary using an electric-field borehole telemetry apparatus, that includes the steps: providing a measure-while-drilling apparatus that includes inclination sensors, directional sensors, logging sensors of choice and an electric-field borehole telemetry apparatus, within the electric-field borehole telemetry apparatus, in addition to monitoring the inclination, direction and logging parameters, monitoring one or more parameters of the electrical output of the telemetry apparatus, transmitting to the surface the inclination, direction and logging parameters as well as the one or more parameters of the electrical output by means of the telemetry apparatus, computing the usual drilling parameters needed to guide the drill string along the intended path, determining from the one or more transmitted parameters of the electrical output from the downhole apparatus parameters indicative of approaching or penetrating the coal boundary, and making corrections to the direction of drilling to maintain the drill string and bit in the coal seam.

    • In one method of calibrating an instrument having N ports, where N>=2, cables of a first type are characterized by connecting a first cable between two of the ports; performing an “unknown-thru” full two-port calibration between the two ports; obtaining a S-parameter of the first cable; saving the S-parameter of the first cable; and then repeating the connecting, performing, obtaining and saving for additional cables having the first type. The cables having the first type are then disconnected from one of the two ports and a measurement plane is transferred from the connected end of the cable to the disconnected end of the cable. Cables of a second type are then characterized by connecting a second cable between the second of the two ports and the disconnected end of the first cable; measuring a S-parameter of the second cable; and saving the S-parameter of the second cable.

    • The invention in an illustrative embodiment provides binding and bridging between a mobile terminal and other more complex terminals in a communication system. The binding is based on a determination of the proximity of the mobile to the other terminal, such that the mobile registers to different complex system terminals as it moves between different cells of the system. In accordance with the invention, a proximity-based temporary association is established, in a memory of a system switch, between the mobile and at least one other system terminal. While the mobile is “registered” in this manner to the other terminal, the mobile user can request permission to utilize the functions of the other terminal in order to, for example, receive incoming calls or place outgoing calls. Other embodiments of the invention provide proximity-based registration which utilizes a beacon device carried by the user, such that the user automatically registers to different system terminals as he or she moves about within the system.

    • A method and system for providing access to multimedia content on-line which is updated virtually simultaneously with the vendor's update process. By a user accessing a page on the World Wide Web, for example, data (encrypted and unencrypted) and instructions are automatically downloaded to a user's computer system for quick access. Depending upon the user's computer system (LAN or a stand-alone personal computer), "applets" containing data and instructions are stored for immediate access. In a Karaoke application of this invention, where the user desires to access songs which are most popular at a given time, the user accesses a page where a song list and other information is displayed on a display apparatus. When the user clicks on a particular song of the song list, the applet executes an authentication request. If the user is authenticated, the authentication is downloaded as part of the applet containing the desired multimedia content (or separately depending upon the circumstances). According to this invention, an applet includes multimedia elements which further include timing codes and a synchronization function which provides for the synchronization of the delivery of the multimedia elements.

    • Calibration is performed for the testing of a device under test. A first port of the device under test is connected to a port of a calibration module. A second port of the device under test is connected to a first port of a device tester. A third port of the device under test is connected to a second port of a device tester. The device tester performs measurements by the device tester to obtain calibration parameters. In response to commands from the device tester, the calibration module changes termination values at the port of the calibration module. The changing of the termination values is performed without physical disconnection of the port of the calibration module from the first port of the device under test.

    • A door-closer has an air cylinder in which a piston rod and a piston body are provided to define first and second sealed chambers. The piston body is sleeved movably on the piston rod and has a tapered bore which is communicated with the second chamber. A closable passage is formed through the piston and communicated with the first and second chambers. A spring-biased seal is disposed in the second chamber and biased to close the closable passage. A regulatable passage is formed through the piston body and communicated with the tapered bore and the first chamber. The piston rod has a shoulder which is movable axially within the tapered bore by rotating the cylinder relative to the piston rod for regulating the air flow between the first and second chambers through the regulatable passage. The spring-biased seal is movable to open the closable passage when the piston body moves in response to the opening of the door. When the door is opened, compressed air flows from the first chamber to the second chamber through the regulatable passage and the closable passage. When the opened door is released, compressed air flows from the second chamber to the first chamber through the regulatable passage.
