    • An apparatus and method are disclosed to manage one or more reserved volume serial numbers in a virtual library grid. The method supplies a virtual library grid comprising one or more virtual library clusters, wherein each of said one or more virtual library clusters comprises a management interface node, at least one virtualization node, at least one management node, at least one library manager node, at least one direct access storage device, one or more information storage media, and at least one data storage device to read information from and to write information to the one or more information storage media. The method then reserves in each of the one or more virtual library system clusters one or more volume serial numbers, and establishes a time out period. The method then determines if the time out period has expired. If the time out period has expired, the method unreserves in each of the one or more virtual library clusters the one or more volume serial numbers.

    • A method and apparatus to recover a construct definition associated with a logical volume in a virtual tape server (VTS) system following a disaster situation involving a library manager database. The method and apparatus re-establish the association between a logical volume or data file or block and a construct definition or volume attribute that assigns certain actions that may be taken on the logical volumes. Such actions and constructs may be defined by a client processor or by the VTS system in order to provide quality storage media management. The constructs may be uploaded to or reconstructed within the library manager database in combination with the host or virtual tape server and consequently made available to the system. In particular, the method and apparatus are configured to recover one or more of a storage group construct, a management class construct, a storage class construct, and a data class construct associated with a logical volume within a VTS system.

    • An automated data storage library, method, and a computer program product manage categories of physical media volumes, which may store stacked logical volumes, in partitions of the library. A media sensor senses the VOLSER identifier of thee physical media volumes at an input station. A library manager is provided, having a computer processor. Upon receipt of a physical media volume at the input station, the library manager receives the sensed VOLSER of the physical media volume; places the physical media volume in an “UNASSIGNED” category of an inventory; and sends a message at an interface to a host system, the message identifying the sensed VOLSER and indicating that the physical media volume has transitioned to the “UNASSIGNED” category. The library manager responds to the host system, reassigning the physical media volume to a defined physical volume category comprising (1) an “IMPORT” category as having active logical volumes, and (2) an “INSERT” category as having no active logical volumes; and sends a message to the host system that the volume transitioned to the defined category.

    • When an automated data storage library includes the capability of storing and accessing more than one media type, it is necessary for the library manager to keep track of what media type is associated with each volume serial number ("VOLSER"), and where each is physically located in the library. For efficiency, VOLSERs will be grouped in sequential ranges, each range associated with a single media type (although a particular media type can be associated with different, non-contiguous ranges). When the number of VOLSERs and ranges is small, new ranges can be easily added, and existing ranges can be easily deleted or modified, manually by a system administrator. However, when the number of VOLSERs and ranges becomes large, it becomes burdensome for the administrator to track the VOLSER ranges and media types. An automated VOLSER range management system is provided which detects whether a new or modified range overlaps or is adjacent to an existing range with the same media type. If so, the system automatically combines the ranges.
