    • A system and method for a single spatial stream based multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication system in wireless MIMO channels with a non-zero mean or a fixed component is provided which utilizes deterministic beamforming in the transmitter and deterministic combining at the receiver. For transmission and reception of a data over MIMO channels, the method and system avoids the requirement of knowledge of the instantaneous channel values at the transmitter and the receiver. By assuming perfect knowledge of the mean value of the channel matrix at the transmitter, a beamforming vector is obtained for the transmitter. The receiver utilizes deterministic receive weights which are chosen using the channel statistics.

    • The present invention provides one or more powered wireless transponders and/or one or more passive wireless transponder devices communicating with a reader/interrogator and the method of efficiently inventorying these devices without the risk of eavesdropping. A reader transmits a random number and transponders generate their own random number. The transponders whose random number matches all or a part of the random number responds. If a collision occurs, the reader's random number can be changed and retransmitted until almost one transponder response is verified in a tree search algorithm. Specifically, the invention concerns a method for inventorying wireless transponders providing anti-eavesdropping anti-collision.

One aspect of the system deals with a highly mobile network with dynamic network topologies and a time varying wireless medium that has neither absolute nor readily observable boundaries outside of which radio nodes are known to be unable to receive network frames, although the desirable open field boundary is 1 mile in radius from a base station node. A synchronous frequency hopping technique is used with mobile nodes that can become slave base station nodes to a master base station node to increase the effective range of the master base station without increasing the transmit power. Furthermore, the use of adjustable sleep times for the mobile nodes, as well as a novel clock calibration method, provides a substantial range increase with acceptable battery size and system latency.

    • A radio-over-fiber (RoF) wireless picocellular system adapted to form an array of substantially non-overlapping individual picocells by operating adjacent picocells at different frequencies is operated to form one or more combined picocells. The combined picocells are formed from two or more neighboring picocells by the central head-end station operating neighboring picocells at a common frequency. Communication between the central head-end station and a client device residing within a combined picocell is enhanced by the availability of two or more transponder antenna systems. Thus, enhanced communication techniques such as antenna diversity, phased-array antenna networks and multiple-input/multiple-output (MIMO) methods can be implemented to provide the system with enhanced performance capability. These techniques are preferably implemented at the central head-end station to avoid having to make substantial changes to the wireless picocellular system infrastructure.

    • A smart external antenna module is proposed for wireless systems. The module allows the advantages of smart antennas to be easily added to existing wireless systems without any modification to the transceiver. Specifically, the smart antenna module weights and combines the signals received by multiple antennas to improve the received signal quality, and then when it detects that there is a signal to be transmitted by the transceiver, it turns off the receiver, turns on the transmitter and uses the receive weights to transmit the signal out of the multiple antennas to improve signal reception at the desired user. Such a module can be added to the external antenna port of an existing transceiver with no change to that transceiver.
