    • A lift station for raising the level of an open channel flow of liquid by sweeping blades mounted to a rotated wheel into the liquid flow after entering a housing to sweep the liquid up and back along a housing interior wall and over a weir edge located well above the level of the open channel flow stream. The flow stream is caused to descend as it enters the housing through a drop to increase the flow velocity to a degree sufficient to offset the impeding effect on upstream flow of the encounter of the flow with the rotating blades. Roller bearings are mounted to the inside of the housing to side walls to support the bladed wheel and are packed with a solid lubricant to insure a long service life despite being exposed to the liquid and debris entrained therein. A reverse rotation device positively prevents a backwards rotation of the wheel to prevent damage to the blades. The wheel is driven by a motor mounted in a housing tray affixed to one side wall driving a drive shaft penetrating the side wall. The housing tray collects any liquid leaking past the shaft and has a sloping bottom directing liquid back towards a drain hole in the housing side wall.

    • A magnetic separator and process involving a train of parallel, spaced magnetic bars connected together to form a closed loop disposed in a tank able to receive a liquid containing ferromagnetic particles which are to be removed from the liquid. The liquid is introduced by an inlet extending within the closed loop so that the liquid is constrained to flow out through spaces between the magnetic bars. Flow out of the tank is through perforate distributor plates and over a pair of weirs, the perforate plates and weirs extending along a respective side of the closed loop to distribute the flow through all of the bar spaces.

    • A filter incorporates a magnetic separator comprised of a series of side by side but spaced apart permanently magnetized bars interconnected to form a train, movably mounted through a tank into which is introduced liquid contaminated with ferromagnetic particles to be removed. The bar train includes a section overlying a vacuum box in the tank which also is overlain with a filter media to remove particles not removed by the separator. The bar train may be mounted to a flight conveyor included in the filter, or alternatively have its own support and drive. A scraper station is located at a discharge end of the tank for removal of accumulated particles from the bars. Scraper blocks are slidably mounted on the bars and remain there throughout the machine cycle, each of the blocks successly engaged with a plate on a band cylinder as the bars are moved into the scraping station. The cylinder is stroked to wipe the bars at the scraper station.

    • A liquid filter is disclosed including a filter chamber into which extends a looped endless belt which is passed above and below rollers on either side of the filter chamber. Both the upper and lower belt segments pass over a support plate in the filter chamber, the lower segment positioned directly underneath the upper belt segment. Filtering flow from the filter chamber passes through both belt segments and through spaced and tapered openings in the support plate and then into a collection trough beneath the support plate. The belt is periodically advanced to carry filter solids out of the filter chamber. In a first version, the upper belt segment acts as the filter media, and is wider to create a sealing of the lateral edges of the upper belt segment. In a second version, a disposable media lies atop both belt segments which act only to carry the disposable media and the disposable media is of wider width to establish the edge sealing. Spaced elongated bars are disposed within the collection trough supporting the bottom of the support plate with spaces between the trough rim and the bars, enabling flushing of the trough interior to remove accumulated fine solid particles. A plurality of filter units may be vertically stacked, with the collection trough of one unit forming the top of the next below filter unit.

    • A collection system for collecting coolant and chips from a series of machine tools for cleaning the coolant in a filter system and recirculating the coolant back to the machine tools. The system includes a series of end-to-end connected shallow depth troughs disposed on the floor below the machine tools, defining a downward sloping gravity flow path. Flow nozzles are used to maintain sufficient flow velocity to move the collected debris and liquid to the end of the trough. Collector-deflector plates prevent oversplashing and misting out of the troughs. A flow nozzle control variably sets the diversion of clean coolant to the flow nozzles in accordance with the sensed velocity of the coolant in the trough.

    • A pressurized liquid filter in which a series of spaced apart, vertically extending filter plates are mounted between the sides of housing, inflatable hose seals extending across each top entrance and bottom exit. Filter media strips are draped vertically into the spaces, each disposed over a perforated sheet forming the outer layer of either side of each filter plate. The space between each pair of filter plates is subdivided into two filtering chambers by a dual element dewatering diaphragm mounted in a frame disposed centrally in each space. Liquid slurry is introduced into each chamber under pressure, flow induced to pass through the filter media strips and passing into vertical passages in the filter plates and into collection troughs extending along each row of passages. The filter media strips are held by carrier belts mounted on powered rollers at the top of each pair of filter chambers to enable the strips to be lowered out of the chambers when the hose seals are retracted after each filtering cycle, and thereafter again raised into position, being scraped and washed prior to being raised into the chambers preparatory to another filter cycle.

    • An arrangement and method for maintaining a minimum flow velocity in return piping receiving dirty coolant from a plurality of machine tools receiving filtered coolant from a filter apparatus. A bypass line diverts clean coolant into the return piping via a pressure reducing valve set to allow make up flow of clean coolant into the return piping just sufficient to maintain a pressure corresponding to the minimum flow velocity in the return piping. A pressure maintaining valve is interposed upstream of the pressure reducing valve and set to restrict flow as necessary to maintain adequate pressure to insure that the machine tools are adequately supplied with clean coolant at start up prior to the beginning of contaminated flow in the return piping.
