    • A hydraulic retarder and brake unit mounted on a rotating vehicle drive shaft has a first rotatable member forming a brake drum and mounted on the drive shaft for rotation therewith. A non-rotatable member supports brake shoes movable into frictional engagement with a lining of the brake drum and are actuated by the lever for frictionally braking rotation of the drive shaft. A plurality of stator vanes are formed on the non-rotatable member. A second rotatable member is mounted on the drive shaft for free rotation independently of the rotation of the drive shaft, while a plurality of rotor vanes are freely rotatably mounted around the drive shaft and in facing opposition to the stator vanes for providing a hydraulic coupling. A clutch selectively rotatably couples the second rotatable member with the first rotatable member so that the rotor vanes are rotated with the drive shaft and the rotation of the drive shaft retarded. In an alternative embodiment, the clutch selectively rotatably couples the second rotatable members with the non-rotatable member and there is also included a planetary gear system including a sun gear formed on the second rotatable member, a ring gear formed with the rotor vanes and planet gears meshing with the sun and ring gears and rotatably mounted to the first rotatable member.

    • A disc brake caliper support structure is disclosed which comprises a rear arm forming a cylinder containing a piston for pressing a friction pad supported and guided by an anchor pin and a front arm for fixing another friction pad to make a caliper holding disc rotors with both the friction pads therebetween movable in the axial direction of guide pins by inserting a plurality of guide pins installed on the caliper in the support member fixed to a bogie frame. One guide pin and the support member are floatably coupled in such a manner as to oscillate relative to each other through a spherical bush and a spherical member, each being set in position by the support member. The other guide pin and the support member are floatingly coupled in such a manner as to oscillate relative to each other through a vibration-proof cylindrical rubber member with a cylindrical inner liner formed with rubber whose outer peripheral axial threads are sawtooth-like in the peripheral direction.

    • A brake device for braking a shaft including a number of rotors rotatable with the shaft and at least one stator interposed among the rotors. The frictional force generated between the rotors and the stator is fed back to a rotatable pressure plate to assist in braking the shaft. In a first embodiment, a projection of the pressure plate engages one of a number of toothed portions that are provided on one of the stator elements to transmit force from the stator elements back to the pressure plate. In a second embodiment, a linkage element for turning the pressure plate also engages one of the toothed portions on the stators, thus transmitting force from the stator back to the pressure plate to assist in braking.
