    • A method and apparatus for maintaining the fluid column in an annulus are provided. The fluid column support, or fluid column seal is disposed about a second casing being lowered into a well through a first casing already cemented in the well. The fluid column support includes a seal connected to the second casing that engages the first casing as it is lowered therethrough. The seal will allow flow in an upward direction but prevents downward flow. The seal will support, or maintain a fluid column in the annulus between the first and second casing in the event that the fluid level below the seal drops for any reason, such as lost circulation or the failure of a buoyancy chamber in the second casing. The fluid seal, in conjunction with stage tools, provides hydrostatic pressure in the well to maintain proper fluid placement therein.

    • A cementing plug having a universal construction and improved wiping and extended wear characteristics. The cementing plug has a plug subassembly with a body member and an elastomeric jacket on the body member. The body member defines a central opening therethrough with a shoulder therein. To configure the plug as a bottom cementing plug, a shearable insert is positioned on the shoulder, and to configure the plug as a top cementing plug, a non-shearable insert is positioned on the shoulder. The shearable insert is one of a plurality of such inserts designed to shear at correspondingly different shear pressures. In a first embodiment, the shearable insert is a substantially flat disk having a uniform thickness, and in a second embodiment, the shearable insert has an outer ring portion and a relatively thin inner domed portion. Thus, a bottom plug may be pumped down a well casing with cement and a top plug thereabove so that when the bottom plug lands at the bottom of the casing, the shearable insert will shear at the predetermined pressure. The jacket has one or more wiper cups which have a conical surface extending at an acute angle with respect to a longitudinal axis of the plug, thereby providing a substantially large contact area in the well casing to improve wiping efficiency and extend life.

    • An automatic fill-up floating apparatus usable in a float collar or a float shoe in a casing string. The apparatus includes a housing having a back check valve positioned therein. A spring biases the valve toward a closed position. A filling body is disposed across an opening at a lower end of the housing and includes a flow passage therethrough. The filling body is shearably pinned to a valve stem extending from the valve and has a holding position in which the valve is held in an open position. A resilient washer is annularly positioned around the valve stem and above the filling body. The washer is free to move upwardly in response to upward movement of flow through the flow passage in the filling body as the casing string is lowered into a well. The floating apparatus may be tripped by pumping fluid downwardly through the casing strings such that the washer is forced against the filling body, sealingly covering the flow passage therethrough. When there is sufficient differential pressure across the washer and filling body, the shear pin will be sheared such and the body released from the valve stem. Thereafter, the spring will be free to move the valve to a closed position when downward fluid flow drops sufficiently.
