    • Implantable therapeutic devices and methods for endovascular placement of devices at a target site, such an opening at a neck of an aneurysm, are disclosed. Selected embodiments of the present technology have closures (102) that at least partially occlude the neck of an aneurysm to stabilize embolic or coagulative treatment of the aneurysm. In one embodiment, for example, an aneurysm closure device comprises a closure structure (102) and a supplemental stabilizer (103). The closure structure can have a curved portion configured to extend along a first vessel, such as a side branch of a bifurcated vessel that extends along a lateral axis (T). The supplemental stabilizer extends from the closure structure along a longitudinal axis (L) transverse to the lateral axis of the first vessel. The supplemental stabilizer is configured to exert an outward force against a second vessel, such as a parent vessel, that extends transversely to the first vessel.

    • Catheters having selectively insertable or selectively activatable and releasable stiffening mechanisms are provided. In general, the catheter is inserted, navigated and withdrawn from a subject in a relaxed, flexible condition and stiffening mechanisms are deployed to prevent the catheter from shifting during placement or operation of an accessory device or tool through the catheter. Stiffening members(s) may be inserted into and removed from one or more longitudinal channel(s) provided in proximity to the catheter wall and generally coaxial with the primary catheter lumen to change the stiffness properties of the catheter. The properties, configuration and size of the stiffening members and channels may be varied to vary the stiffness properties of the catheter and stiffening members may be constructed from materials having shape change properties or materials that change conformation or stiffness with application of heat, current or electrical field. Stiffening mechanisms may also employ energy absorbing and viscoelastic polymer materials having variable stiffness properties depending on ambient conditions.

    • Catheters having a tapered, atraumatic distal tip are provided. In one embodiment, the outer surface of the distal portion of the catheter has a generally non-cylindrical and substantially triangular cross-sectional configuration. The inner surface cross-sectional configuration of the distal portion of the catheter may match the outer surface, or it may have a cylindrical or oval configuration. The terminal orthogonal surface of the distal catheter tip is chamfered or rounded or contoured. In another embodiment, inner and/or outer catheter surfaces have a three dimensional surface conformation and may be dimpled or grooved. The grooves may be generally liner or curved or helical or in a spiral configuration. Dimpled and/or grooved surface discontinuities may be provided in connection with and in addition to lubricious coatings, surfaces, and the like.
