    • An integrated audio/communication system for use in a motor vehicle includes a processing unit that selectively executes control routines/programs based upon the operational mode of the system. The system may operate in a audio playback mode, and in a telephony mode. In the audio playback mode the processing unit executes a control routine/program associated with audio playback. Whereas, in the telephony mode the processing unit executes a control routine/program associated with telephony. The operational mode of the system may be switched from audio playback to telephony, and visa versa. Selectively configuring the processing unit based upon the operational mode of the system, and allowing the system to easily transition between modes, provides a highly integrated audio/communication system for use in a motor vehicle.

    • The audio amplifier includes a variable gain amplifier receiving the input audio signal and providing the output signal, whereby the output signal corresponds to the input signal amplified by a limiter gain. The audio amplifier further includes a limiter gain calculation unit, thus the input signal is amplified by the limiter gain. A control unit receives a signal representative of the input signal and is configured to estimate, based on a mathematical model, the input current or the total output current of the audio amplifier thus providing an estimated current signal corresponding to (and resulting from) the output signal, whereby the limiter gain calculation unit is configured to calculate, dependent on the estimation, the limiter gain such that the actual input current or the total output current of the audio amplifier does not exceed a threshold current value.

    • A pulse width modulator for modulating a rectangular carrier signal in accordance with an input signal includes a modulating unit that receives the input signal and provides a digital output word. The output word has a pre-defined number of digits comprising a first contiguous set of binary ones (“1”) and a second contiguous set of binary zeroes (“0”) and in which the fraction of the binary ones (“1”) represents the digital input signal. The modulator also includes a random number generator that generates a pseudo-random sequence, and a flipping unit configured to flip, or not, the output word provided by the modulating unit in accordance with the pseudo-random sequence thus providing a randomly modified digital pulse width modulated output signal.
