The mirror element has a curved reflective surface and a printed primary image contacting the reflective surface. The framing element is spaced apart from the mirror element and includes a background image element positioned to face toward the reflective surface. The framing element also includes a transparent view port that is positioned opposite the primary image so as to provide a line of sight through the framing element to the reflective surface and the primary image. The apparatus further includes a lens sandwiched between the mirror and framing elements, such as a lens with a cylindrical body, formed of a transparent or translucent plastic, ceramic, glass, or other material. The apparatus may include a light source that transmits light into the lens or onto the primary image or the background images.

    • An apparatus hovering winged objects. The apparatus includes an elongate support and a driver with an output shaft that supports a first end of the support. The driver imparts an oscillating displacement to the first end of the support. A body is mounted at a second end of the support and wings are attached to the support at an offset distance from the body. The body is positioned near the second end to swivel or pivot in response to vibration of the support. The driver vibrates the first end at a frequency that shapes the support as a wave, and the frequency is selected or tuned such that the wings are displaced more than the body such by imparting a harmonic frequency on the support. The output shaft is positioned by the driver in angular positions to move the first end of the support and the body and wings.

    • An assembly is provided for simulating the dilating and constricting of a pupil of an eye. The assembly includes a shell that is at least translucent to light and a dilation mechanism with a deformable member positionable to contact an inner surface of the shell. An actuator is provided in the dilation mechanism to move the deformable member toward and away from the inner surface, which causes the size of a contact area between the inner surface and a lip of the deformable member to vary over a preset range. The assembly includes a light source directing light onto the inner surface of the shell. The deformable member dynamically blocks light from reaching the inner surface, creating a pupil or dark hole. The light may be an ultraviolet light and the deformable member contacts a pattern or artwork on the inner surface including portions that glow in ultraviolet light.
