    • An add and subtract relay for a pinball machine or the like having an add solenoid and a subtract solenoid mounted side by side with respective drive pawls and associated ratchet wheels, the teeth of both of the ratchet wheels being faced in the same direction. The wheels are axially detented together with one of them being axially shiftable with respect to the frame for operating a switch when the wheels are rotated out of, and into, a relative reference phase position. As an added feature the wheels have telescoping concentric shafts with cooperating discs at the ends of the shafts with indicia to provide constant indication of offset in terms of the number of steps of phase position. Each solenoid has a return spring so that the drive pawl advances the engaged ratchet wheel forwardly one step upon deenergization of the solenoid. A cam is provided adjacent each drive pawl for crowding the pawl inwardly against the ratchet wheel as it approaches the end of its forward stroke to block the ratchet wheel against unwanted rotation in either direction.

    • A bobbin assembly in an electric relay, the bobbin having a pair of flanges and with one of the flanges having an associated cap which at least partially encloses the end of the bobbin and which serves as a seating surface for an iron core, the cap having windows formed therein to provide access for a staking tool so that the core is held captive within the bobbin prior to assembly in the relay. The outer end of the core carries a shading ring which is held in registered position by an embossment. The cap is clamped between the core and the frame of the relay to provide a magnetic gap thereby to reduce the level of residual flux when the relay coil is de-energized.

    • A target mechanism for pinball machines and other target-type games which variably actuates an associated scoring mechanism to cause it to register a score representative of how directly and forcefully the target has been struck. The target mechanism has an arm which is driven from its initial position a distance dependent upon how directly and forcefully the target has been struck, and a pulse generating means for converting the distance the target arm is driven to a corresponding number of pulses which are supplied to actuate the scoring mechanism. The pulse generating means comprises a master switch which is operated to provide a predetermined number of pulses each scoring cycle and a plurality of auxiliary switches which are operated sequentially and in synchronism with the master switch such that the operation of each auxiliary switch tends to inhibit a respective one of the master switch pulses. The movement of the target arm at least a predetermined minimum distance from its initial position causes a bypass circuit to be completed around a number of such auxiliary switches corresponding to the extent of the movement so that the appropriate number of pulses are transmitted to the scoring mechanism.

    • A two-player pinball machine intended for simultaneous play by a player at each end and in which the play field has means for tilting first in one direction and then in the other to place the players alternately in offensive and defensive roles, triggered by passage of the ball into the offensive player''s out-hole. Scoring targets are provided on the play field with the prime goal being the goal at the opposite out-hole. Sets of flippers, controlled from the respectively opposite ends of the machine, are provided for the offensive player to drive the ball to the scoring targets and for concurrent use by the defensive player to thwart the offensive player, particularly by driving the ball through the out-hole of the latter, to achieve tilting of the play field so as to take over the offensive role. A single ball, which need not leave the surface of the play table, sufficies for both players. A control arrangement is provided for the targets in which a portion of the targets are activated in a commutated sequence and in which the status of commutation is preserved, and the sequence is reversed, incident to reversal of the tilt of the table. A tilting mechanism is used which is disengageable for easy access to the underside of the table for servicing purposes. The accumulated score of each player is indicated by a single set of drums viewable through oppositely facing panels extending bridgingly over the center of the machine.
