    • In various embodiments, a cool air unit may provide relatively cooler air from outside a rack to fan inlets at the rear of a rack mounted chassis (e.g., a PXI chassis). This may reduce the amount of warmer rack air in the chassis. The cooler air may be presented (e.g., made available) by the cool air unit to the inlet fans at the rear of the chassis. Because each chassis may thus have inlet air that is approximately ambient temperature (instead of an elevated temperature resulting from warmed air existing a preceding chassis in a rack), the chassis may be relatively cooler. The cool air unit may provide a system temperature reduction for system components like power supplies, controller hard drives, and other temperature sensitive modules or components.

    • A chassis for plug-in modules may be provided with a vented and ducted sub-rack support member. The vented and ducted sub-rack support member may deflect a portion of the air flowing within the chassis through vents in the top surface of the vented and ducted sub-rack support member in order to increase the air flow to heat producing components mounted on the backplane above the support member. The increased air flow may increase air flow velocity and decrease the ambient temperature of the air around these components and improve the dissipation of heat from each component into the air. Air flow above the vented and ducted sub-rack support member may also be redirected by upper deflectors mounted on the support member to portions of plug-in cards adjacent to the upper deflectors and may provide additional cooling to components on the plug-in cards near the backplane.

    • A structure may be coupled to an adapter coupling two or more modules together. In some embodiments, the structure may direct air and/or dissipate heat from the modules into the air. The structures may direct air to components on a module that might receive less airflow without the structures. In some embodiments, the structure may be coupled to the adapter through a fastener (e.g., multiple structures may be manufactured with a plate, and the plate may be coupled to the adapter). In some embodiments, thermally conductive pathways may be used on the modules to conduct heat from components on the modules to a heat dissipating structure on the adapter.

While cables may be connected to the card in the module, external forces acting on the cable and/or module may result in the cable pulling the card out of the module, damaging the connector or card. In some embodiments, a strain-relieving device may be used to counter these forces on the cable. In some embodiments, a positioning strip may be coupled to a base placed over the card in the module. In some embodiments, a cable grip may be coupled to the positioning strip through a bracket. In some embodiments, the cable grip may include two plates that are coupled to the bracket through fasteners. As the fasteners are tightened, a distance between the two plates may decrease, and a cable between the plates may be at least partially secured between the plates.

    • A disclosed flying craft includes a suspension structure having a first end and a second end, a lift unit, and a payload unit. The lift unit includes a nacelle and a tailboom, and pivotally couples to the first end of the suspension structure, and a payload unit couples to the structure's second end. Thus the tailboom can pivotally couple with respect to the payload unit, which advantageously permits the tailboom to assume an orientation desirable for a particular mode of flight. During vertical flight or hover, the tailboom can hang from the lift unit in an orientation that is substantially parallel to the suspension structure and that minimizes resistance to downwash from the lift unit. During horizontal flight, the tailboom can be orthogonal to the suspension structure, extending rearward in an orientation where it can develop pitching and yawing moments to control and stabilize horizontal flight. Advantageous variations and methods are also disclosed.

    • A novel bar code and optical reader for scanning the same. The bar code consists of two parallel channels of marks and spaces representing bit sequences, a given bit in one sequence being associated with a bit in the other sequence, forming successive bit pairs. The data is encoded in the logical exclusive-or combination of the bit pairs. An alternating clock scheme is further used to encode the data, which limits the width of any mark or space to twice the minimum width. The optical reader includes two optical detectors connected to a microprocessor which records the time intervals between mark/space transitions in each channel. These time intervals are used to reconstruct the bit sequences in each channel; the bit sequences may then be correlated and the XOR operation performed, yielding the encoded data.
