    • A method and apparatus for configuring an image path of an image processing apparatus is herein described. The image processing apparatus includes at least an input terminal or scanner for inputting or scanning document into image data and an output terminal or printer for printing documents. The method includes selecting one of a plurality of output modes using a selection device associated with the image processing apparatus. Based on the selected output mode, an image path among a plurality of image processing elements of the apparatus is selected among a plurality of image paths. Each image path corresponds to one of the plurality of output modes. After a document is scanned with the scanner into image data, the image data is processed with the processing elements in the selected image path, and output or printed based on the processed image data.

    • A digital scanner or copier is provided that can dynamically adjust the black point of an image to be scanned based on detected background level of the document. A pre-scan acts on a small scanning window near a leading edge of the document to obtain a histogram of grey-level values. From this, the background level of the document can be obtained to determine a white point of the image. Additionally, a black point of the image is originally set to a default offset value. However, an adjustment factor based on the detected white point is used to adjust the default offset value to a value that increases the dynamic range of the output image, while still maintaining solid black for black areas of the image.

    • A method of controlling an image forming apparatus in accordance with the invention can include the steps of: providing a system tone reproduction curve; representing a manually adjustable tone reproduction curve; modifying the manually adjustable tone reproduction curve to be consistent with the system tone reproduction curve; and cascading the manually adjustable tone reproduction curve with the system tone reproduction curve to provide a new adjusted tone reproduction curve. The method in accordance with the invention enables a user to achieve enhanced flexibility in determining how to adjust an output image. The method can also determine a new system tone reproduction curve, based upon the current settings of the manually adjustable tone reproduction curve, in real time, which reduces the amount of storage space required.
