摘要： A method is provided including determining a first power level required from a diesel powered system. The first power level corresponds to a first proportion of a maximum power. The method also includes determining an emission output for a mission based on the first power level. The method further includes determining a second power level corresponding to a second proportion of the maximum power, wherein alternate use of the second power level and at least one of the first power level or a third power level results in a lower emission output for the mission, with the overall resulting power being proximate the minimum power required. The method also includes automatically controlling operation of the diesel powered system by using the second power level alternately with at least one of the first power level or the third power level.

摘要： A method and system for controlling a compression ignition engine in railroad locomotives and other land or marine-based large propulsion or power generation equipment operable in a selected one of a plurality of engine throttle notches is provided. Each throttle notch is indicative of a respective load condition of the engine. The engine has an intercooling system using a predetermined cooling fluid and the engine is configured to receive a predetermined combustion-supporting fluid (e.g., air) into a plurality of cylinders through respective intake manifolds. The method allows for sensing the selected throttle notch, and for selectively actuating the intercooling system to adjust a predetermined operational parameter (e.g., intake manifold air temperature) based on the sensed throttle notch and/or environmental conditions.

摘要： A diesel engine (E) has a combustion chamber (C), a piston (T) movable in the chamber, air intake and exhaust valves (IV, EV), and a nozzle (N) injecting fuel into the combustion chamber. By controlling characteristics of an air-fuel mixture, emissions produced by combustion of the air-fuel mixture in the chamber are reduced to levels which satisfy the Tier 2 requirements established by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the engine. This may include controlling hydraulic flow characteristics through the nozzle, increasing the compression ratio within the combustion chamber, lowering the manifold air temperature (MAT), and retarding the start of fuel injection (SOI) within the chamber.
