    • A connector cable assembly has first and second plugs wired to permit plugging into a first pair of electrical plugs with a pair of terminals in a first configuration to place the terminals of those plugs in parallel connection, and to permit plugging into a second pair of electrical plugs with a pair of terminals in a second configuration, to place the terminals of those plugs in series connection. In a commercial embodiment, such a cable assembly can be used to provide power to electrical devices such as gas valves connected to receive power in parallel from the first pair of electrical plugs, and to connect in series, safety switches connected to plugs with a pair of terminals in the second configuration. By using an adapter with specialized connections between two sets of terminals it is possible to use additional cable assemblies to connect in excess of two switches in series.

    • An air duct has a filter mount opening originally intended to accept a shallow filter element for filtering air entering the duct. The opening has an interior flange whose original purpose was to support the shallow filter element. This flange has interior edges defining an air passage opening. The invention is implemented a filter unit including a frame and a deep filter element mounted in the frame. The frame has dimensions allowing the filter unit to replace the conventional shallow filter element with the frame inserted into the air passage opening and closely spaced to all of the interior edges. A resilient gasket is mounted adjacent to the opening's interior flange and projects slightly into the air passage opening so as to contact the deep filter element's frame. The gasket prevents air leakage between the interior flange's interior edges and the frame. In one embodiment, the frame has a flange to mate with a surface of the air passage opening's interior flange so as to prevent air leakage and to position and support the filter unit.

    • A thermostat employing a lever for selecting the temperature setting has a detent mechanism for creating individual detent positions associated with temperature setting values. In a preferred embodiment the detent mechanism comprises ridges and valleys in the surface of the baseplate on which the thermostat elements are mounted. A projection on the setting lever engages the individual valleys to create the detent effect, and a edge of the cover cooperates with resiliency of the lever to deflect the lever so as to cause the projection on the lever to continually engage the ridges and valleys. Another embodiment has ridges and valleys on the edge of the cover which engage a first projection on the lever. A second projection slides along the baseplate surface and cooperates with resiliency of the lever to deflect the lever creating force urging the first projection into continual engagement with the ridges and valleys.

    • A rotary actuator derives its power from a synchronous motor preferably of the AC type providing constant output speed, and from a non-synchronous motor, preferably of the DC type, in a helper capacity to provide additional torque for a load. Use of certain types of non-synchronous motors to provide a portion of the maximum torque is cheaper than using a synchronous motor whose size is adequate for the maximum torque requirement. A torque limiting clutch which couples the non-synchronous motor output to the synchronous motor output allows the non-synchronous motor to run compatibly with the synchronous motor. A hysteresis coupling type of torque limiting clutch is preferred. In a preferred embodiment, both of the motors drive a gear train, with the non-synchronous motor coupled to the gear train by the torque limiting clutch.
