    • A telephone with a mute ringer function having an automatic disabling feature includes multiple call indicators including a ringer. A power output reducing device is connected to the ringer to reduce the ringer volume prior to a connection between the telephone and a remotely located telephone. A volume switch control unit is connected to the power output reducing device to reset the ringer volume to a level established prior to a volume reduction upon detecting either connectivity to the remotely located telephone or the termination of the connection. A selecting device selects an incoming call indicator prior to the connection to the remote telephone. A reverting device automatically reverts power to a previously selected incoming call indicator upon either establishing connectivity for the call or the termination of the call. In a preferred embodiment, the ringer power output reducing device and the ringer power output resetting device include a volume switch connected to the ringer.

    • A telephone having key/light control logic which enables independent and dual usage of physical key/light pairs. Firmware within the telephone's key and light control logic is provided access to special tables which have definitions for each key. When a key is depressed, a feature activation code is sent uplink to notify the PBX of the user's action. In response to receipt of the feature activation code, the PBX returns a feature indication. When the telephone receives the feature indication, it scans the tables and turns on all lights for which the feature indication matches the key definition. Within the tables, an extra definition is maintained for the standalone light. This definition is downloaded by the switch at phone initialization time along with the key definitions. If the switch defines a key definition as "local" then the user programs the definition of that key either via the phone keypad or through an application. The independent or dual usage of a light is achieved by using a special case code in the phone firmware when the lights are being lit via feature indications from the switch. If the feature indication matches the key definition for the key reserved, for example, for Mute, then the light is lit only if the key is a locally defined key. In this way, lights for local keys will always match their key definition. Conversely, if the feature indication matches the definition for the standalone light, the light next to the Mute key is lit only if the key is system defined.

    • A telephone for use in ISDN telephone systems that implement advanced features such as call forwarding and a method for operating an ISDN telephone system to provide such advanced features are provided for. In an ISDN telephone system implementing the invention, the telephone communicates commands to the switching system by sending codes to the switching system. These codes normally denote keys on the telephone that have been depressed by a user of the telephone. A user of the advanced telephone features having a conventional telephone signals the switching system to activate the advanced telephone feature by depressing a specific key on the conventional telephone. In a system according to the present invention, a code having a value greater than any key code in any telephone in the telephone system is defined and an advanced telephone feature is assigned to that code thereby causing the switching system to implement that advanced feature when the switching system receives that code from a telephone over the network. A telephone according to the present invention includes a menu system that allows the user to select the advanced features implemented by the telephone system. The controller also includes a communication program that causes the switching system to download a list of advanced features implemented by the switching system, and the controller creates a menu item corresponding to each advanced feature identified in the list. In one embodiment of the present invention, the controller implements programs that simplify the use of the advanced features.

    • A method, system, and device for performing diagnostic testing of digital feature phones remotely located from a diagnostic device includes establishing a bi-directional communications link between a digital feature phone and the diagnostic device. The diagnostic device transmits signals to the digital feature phone which activate a troubleshooting program in the feature phone to perform a self-test and access an error list stored in the memory of the feature phone. The diagnostic device can direct the feature phone's troubleshooting program to execute different troubleshooting procedures; depending on what information is needed. The feature phone transmits the results of the troubleshooting procedures back to the diagnostic device, whereupon the diagnostic device determines the performance characteristics of the feature phone based upon the troubleshooting results. Based on the performance characteristics, the diagnostic device determines whether more information is required regarding the feature phone's operational status. If more information is required, the diagnostic device can request a second round of troubleshooting. In one embodiment, the diagnostic device and the feature phone are connected via an ISDN network which provides at least two B-channels for data communication and a D-channel for transmitting signaling data. The diagnostic device transmits the request for troubleshooting to the feature phone via a D-channel and the feature phone returns the troubleshooting results via the D-channel as well. The D-channel communication between the diagnostic device and feature phone occurs in the form of message associated UUI (MA-UUI) signals. In this manner, the entire troubleshooting procedure can be executed on a customer's feature phone without interrupting service to the feature phone.
