摘要： A communication protocol provides diversity in UL and DL between a headset and a host device that transmits right and left audio data on separate channels. Each ear piece establishes an independent channel to the host device, and there is another channel between them. Each ear piece monitors not only its own channel to the host, but also the other ear piece's channel to the host. One ear piece may acknowledge the host device for a correctly received packet, which the other ear piece missed, on the other ear piece's channel to the host device, avoiding retransmissions. The eavesdropped data is provided to the other ear piece on the shared channel, providing for path diversity in DL. The ear pieces may exchange picked-up voice content to send to the host device, providing for path diversity in UL.

In another embodiment, a speaker (230) is part of the sub-assembly (600, 700, 900, 1000, 1200, 1300, 1500) as well. The sub-assembly (600, 700, 900, 1000, 1200, 1300, 1500) may include several cavities (1254, 1252) and vents (1264, 1262) before and behind the speaker (230) for optimal acoustic performance. The sub-assembly (600, 700, 900, 1000, 1200, 1300, 1500), and any necessary external audio components, can be inserted in an external housing (104) forming the visual product appearance and the anthropometric comfort and fit design of a true wireless headphone or headset (100).

The communication protocol provides communication paths between the host device (19) and each ear piece (12a, 12b) of the wireless stereo headset (12), as well as a communication path between the two ear pieces (12a, 12b) of the wireless stereo headset (12). In addition to receiving audio information from the host device (19), each ear piece (12a, 12b) may request audio information from the other ear piece (12b, 12a), thus obtaining path diversity. Using special control messages on connection between the ear pieces (12a, 12b), the ear pieces (12a, 12b) inform each other which audio information has been received successfully from the host device (19). Using a common clock broadcast by the host device (19), the ear pieces (12a, 12b) may indicate which audio information was missed and should be forwarded on the communication path (P2, 540, 1620) between the two ear pieces (12a, 12b).
