    • This invention provides a winding machine comprising a support drum, a winding tube at least partially supported on the support drum, and a web of material being wound around the winding tube to form a web reel in response to rotation of the support drum and the web reel, the point where the web reel rotates into contact with the support drum being called the nip. The winding machine further includes a nip safety guard comprising a finger presence sensor, a support mechanism supporting the finger presence sensor adjacent one of the web reel and the support drum, and a moving mechanism that moves and locates the finger presence sensor support mechanism depending on the size of the web reel so that the finger presence sensor is located closely adjacent the one of the web reel and the support drum and spaced a safe distance from the nip. The safety guard moving mechanism further includes a control for determining the size of the web reel and operating the moving mechanism to position the finger sensor. More particularly, the winding machine nip safety guard comprises a safety shield that covers the support drum and is mounted for rotation about the support drum, the safety shield having an edge adjacent the nip, and the moving mechanism moves the safety shield away from the nip during higher speed winding and towards the nip when winding at significantly lower speeds.

    • A rider roll system for exerting an even nip load force along the surface of a roll of paper being wound from a continuous on-coming web in a winder comprises a plurality of rider roll wheel elements, each of which is connected to a common source of hydraulic pressure to provide the same rolling nip force against the wound paper roll. The rider roll wheel elements are mounted to a beam which is translationally movable above the wound paper roll. The beam and individual rider roll wheel elements are moved upwardly as a function of the increase in the diameter of the wound paper roll. The relationship of the beam movement relative to the diameter of the wound paper roll is controlled by a programmable logic controller. The individual wheel elements are loaded against a counter-balance force so as to provide equal, but cushioned, nip force against the surface of the wound paper roll at short intervals along its length. The magnitude of the evenly applied nip load force is also controlled as a function of the wound paper roll diameter.

    • A method for effecting a set change in a winder for a papermaking machine, comprises skip-slitting the paper web across the width of the web transversely to the direction of web travel in the winder. An adhesive stripe is applied to the web on either side of where the skip-slit is located. The skip-slit and application of the glue is done at a location upstream of the winder to avoid the problems associated with mounting and operating such equipment beneath the winder. The paper web is severed by advancing the skip-slit to a position near the 10 o'clock position over the surface of a first winder drum where the web is halted and the wound paper roll is urged off its support on the first winder drum to thereby increase the tension in the web between the wound roll and web supported on the first winder drum to sever the web. The adhesive stripes on either side of the severance are then applied to the wound roll and a new core, and the process is repeated.

    • A method and apparatus is disclosed for effecting, in a preferred embodiment, a double-sided web splice for paper webs produced in the papermaking process. A trailing portion of a first paper web is held and cross-cut over a support beam which is selectively moved into, and out of, supporting position beneath. The leading portion of a second paper web is brought into position over the support beam where the second paper web is also held and cross-cut. Carriages containing first and second tape means traverse the trailing and leading edges of the webs. On one carriage is mounted a plow-like web lifting and separating apparatus for contacting the leading and trailing edges of the webs and forming a splice bed between the temporarily lifted and separated web edges. A first tape means is mounted to the carriage to extend an adhesive tape in the web bed, the tape having a non-adhesive side supported on the beam. A second tape dispensing apparatus is mounted to a second carriage for applying a second adhesive tape with an adhesive side facing downwardly against the edges of the first and second webs over the support beam. A web pressing apparatus is mounted on the second carriage downstream of the second tape dispensing apparatus for pressing the tapes together to splice the webs together.

    • A high pressure water jet is used in conjunction with a relatively low power laser to produce a smooth cut in a traveling web. The cutting procedures produces a relatively small amount of fiber dust in the atmosphere surrounding the cutting operation. The water jet severs the traveling web into separate parts, and the laser is directed to the severed edges to burn away the protruding ends of the paper fibers to produce a uniform, smooth cut in both severed edges. A trough is disposed on the side of the web opposite the water jet and laser to receive and collect the water severing the web and the fiber dust, and to diffuse the laser beam emissions.
