    • A method and apparatus are provided for effectuating voice communication between a mobile station and a mobile radio network. A gateway to the mobile radio network receives an incoming voice call for a destination mobile station and accesses information pertaining the status and location of the destination mobile station. A determination is made as to whether the destination mobile station is capable of operation in a voice mode using circuit-switched communications across a traffic channel. If the destination mobile station is operable in the voice mode, a circuit-switched communication on a traffic channel is established between the mobile radio network and the destination mobile station. Otherwise, the incoming voice call is routed to a voice gateway which converts the voice call to data packets and routes the data packets to the mobile station across an Internet Protocol communication network to a packet gateway of the mobile radio network. The packet gateway routes the call across a packet data channel of the mobile radio network to the destination mobile station using a packet data service.

    • A telecommunications system and method for the exchange of standards information facilitates communication by invoking a standards translator whenever two users within the system utilize incompatible communication technologies. In accordance with an embodiment of the present invention, standards information is interchanged between two communications nodes, such that the equipment at those nodes may communicate with each other directly if the same standards are used at both nodes or communicate through the aid of the standards translator when different standards are used. The system and method of the present invention, through the interchange of standards information between the nodes, minimizes communications disruptions caused by mismatched standards.

    • A method and apparatus for providing a call circuit connection between a mobile station and a remote application host is disclosed. Once a call circuit connection is initially established between a mobile station and remote application host to enable data to transfer therebetween, the call circuit connection is monitored for detection of an idle condition. Upon detection of the idle condition, identifying information for the call circuit connection is stored, and a first portion of the call circuit connection is disconnected while maintaining a second portion of the connection. Upon a request for reconnection of the call circuit connection, the first portion of the call circuit connection is reestablished with the second portion to enable continued data transfer.
