    • The present invention relates to a system 10 and method for identifying the position of cellular telephones 12 in a geographical area served by a mobile telephony network 14. The system 10 comprises a mobile location center 15 capable of analyzing information about the electromagnetic (RF) field transmitted by cellular telephones 12 with reference information including both RF information and probabilistic information associated with the morphology of the geographical area. The method involves assigning different weights to the location of cellular telephones 12 as a function of probabilistic reference information, and thus makes it possible to use statistical methods for resolving situations of ambiguity in locating cellular telephones which would otherwise be resolved in purely random fashion.

    • A road traffic monitoring system includes: a first input for receiving position estimations of mobile terminals; a second input for receiving input specifications chosen depending on the type of service for which such monitoring is performed; and an output for generating road traffic maps, each road traffic map being associated with a set of territory elements and including, for each one of the territory elements, at least one mobility index of mobile terminals travelling within such territory element. Preferably, input specifications are chosen among at least two of the following parameters, territory element, territory element observation time slot, and maximum allowable error on the estimation of at least one mobility index.

    • The present invention relates to a system 10 and corresponding method for locating mobile terminals 12 following a location request whereto is associated information whose content depends on the position and characteristics of the mobile terminal 12 to be located. The system 10 comprises a cellular phone location centre (MLC centre) 15 able to locate the mobile terminals 12, in selective fashion, as the type and reliability of the received information vary. The system 10 and corresponding method allow, by means of the MLC centre 15, to select, among a plurality of location engines, a determined engine suited to manage the received information and selectively to identify both the position of the mobile terminal 12 and accuracy indicators relating to the type of locating operation performed.

    • A method is disclosed for locating a terminal in a local wireless telecommunications network adapted to provide an estimated position of the terminal depending on a set of configuration data and a set of measuring data indicating whether the terminal belongs to a subset of said coverage areas and acquired from the terminal or network. The set of configuration data has a plurality of data bases of configurations, each one having a respective weight function, and the set of measuring data has a plurality of measuring types, depending on the type of terminal. A method for associating, to every combination of a data base of configurations and a measuring type, a respective locating procedure corresponding to an accuracy value of the locating estimation and actuating the locating procedure related to a combination selected by executing a related processing program. A processing system and a processing program or group of programs can be executed by the system and arranged to perform the above method.
