    • An electronic video dental camera is provided which overcomes the disadvantages of both prior art dental mirrors, endoscopes, and video endoscopes. The electronic video dental camera is readily manipulated by dentists who are familiar with the manipulation of dental mirrors. Such an electronic video dental camera includes a handle to be held the user, and a camera head located at the distal end of the handle, with the camera head being formed at an angle to the handle, as in prior art dental mirrors. One embodiment includes provision for the flow of a selected fluid in order to defog and/or clean the camera lens. In one embodiment, the camera head includes light sources for illuminating the area to be viewed. In one embodiment, the handle of the dental camera includes means for transporting all appropriate signals and fluids to and from the camera head, and, if desired, valves and switching means located on the handle for controlling such communication to the camera head. One embodiment includes a dental camera head which allows a number of attachments to be used, such as a telephoto lens, wide angle lens, relay lens, and transillumination devices. In an alternative embodiment, the dental camera is attached to another dental instrument, such as a dentist's drill, thereby allowing video monitoring of the task being performed. In another embodiment, the dental camera is formed as an integral part of the dental instrument.

    • A color video endoscope system having a control unit compatible with various endoscopes. Each endoscope generates unique signals to the control unit to optimize the clocking out of data from the solid state image sensor, to optimize the processing of data received from the image sensor, and to identify the size and location of the image formed on the image sensor so as to control the image formed on the monitor. The control unit generates alternating fields of red, green and blue light through the endoscope light guide with blank fields between the color fields, during which time data is clocked out of the image sensor, thereby preventing image "smear" caused by immediately successive color fields.

    • A compact optical imaging system with application to a viewing head of an endoscope. A lens assembly gathers and focuses light into parallel rays which are turned 90.degree. from the lens assembly optical axis. A planar image sensor is oriented parallel to the lens assembly optical axis and receives the light which has been turned. The light enters a glass plate serving as the back side of the image sensor and impinges on active light-sensitive elements on a silicon layer deposited on the glass plate. A substrate is bonded on the silicon layer and supports circuitry for buffering and driving signals to and from the image snsor. The substrate has a plurality of slots aligned with the bonding pads of the image sensor to permit electrical connection between the buffering and driving circuitry and the image sensor.

    • This disclosure depicts a light source device for an endoscope, incorporating a lamp to supply the light to a light guide fiber bundle for the illumination of the endoscope. This light source device for the endoscope has a heat radiating device for the light guide fiber bundle for the illumination, which has been highly heated by the radiant heat of the lamp. The radiating device includes a support ring and radiator fins radially movably mounted to and supported by the support ring via resilient members. When a light inciding end portion of the light guide fiber bundle for the illumination is installed into the light source device for the endoscope, the heat radiating device is moved radially outwardly against the biasing forces of the resilient members, and the radiator fins are reliably brought into close contact with the outer periphery of the light inciding end portion of the light guide fiber bundle. As the result, the light source device for the endoscope according to the present invention is high in radiation efficiency and can prevent the light guide fiber bundle from being highly heated.
