    • Methods are disclosed for improving output image quality and reducing processing time in digital halftoning systems. The direction of processing each scan line of a source image is selected with blue noise, rather than the tradional raster scan sequence, to reduce directional and start-up anomalies. Source image pixel gray values are adjusted by means of imposed matrices, prior to error diffusion, in order to minimize distracting patterns and other anomalies in the output image. Error diffusion threshold values are modulated with blue noise, and the average threshold value reduced to reduce start-up delay. Finally, error terms in the error diffusion process are diffused according to a new three-weight filter. The three-weight filter substantially reduces error diffusion processing time, without sacrificing output image quality when used in combination with the modulated error diffusion threshold values.

    • In color graphics printing, incompatible inks, such as true black and color inks, tend to bleed across color field boundaries. Moreover, in four-color systems, there is a discontinuity in the physical color gamut, as distinguished from the logical color gamut, associated with the redundant color. A method is disclosed for alleviating both problems by adjusting image data prior to dithering. The method slightly shifts the logical color indicated in the image data so as to avoid the discontinuity that arises with neutral colors. Preferably, in a four-color printing system, yellow is depleted in the image data, so that after dithering, more dots of blue ink are printed in a given area than would be printed otherwise. For each pixel, the amount of correction is inversely related to the color saturation. The presence of blue ink dots within the substantially black field reduces bleed along the field edges.

    • A method of halftoning a digital gray scale image is disclosed that utilizes a point by point thresholding comparison to a novel diagonal correlation dither matrix. The new dither matrix forces diagonal correlation of adjacent dots in the output image while maximizing dispersion of dots, thereby producing visually unobtrusive output dot patterns. The matrix is generated according to a spatial domain cost function that determines a cost value for each candidate pixel based on respective radial distances and relative angles between a candidate pixel and the ON pixels in the matrix such that unit diagonals are favored over placement of vertically or horizontally adjacent dots.
