    • A short chain peptide material is provided containing a peptide material derived from a protein material. At least a majority of the peptides in the peptide material have a peptide chain length of 7 peptides or less. The peptide material is at least 95% soluble in an aqueous solution having a pH at which the protein material from which the peptide material is derived is insoluble. A process for forming the short chain peptide material is also provided. A slurry is formed of a protein material at a pH at which the protein material is substantially insoluble. The protein material is contacted with an enzyme having substantial endopeptidase activity and substantial exopeptidase activity at a temperature and for a time sufficient to form the peptide material of the invention.

    • An exhaust system for an internal combustion engine having a primary catalytic converter located downstream of the engine and a hydrocarbon adsorber located downstream of the primary converter. The adsorber comprises a ceramic wall-flow substrate having a zeolite coating, having the ability to selectively adsorb hydrocarbon molecules from exhaust gas, applied to the interior surfaces of the inlet passages of the substrate and a catalytic coating applied to the adjacent surfaces of the walls of the outlet passages of the substrate. The catalyst preferably has a light-off temperature below the desorption temperature of the zeolite. In operation, hydrocarbon is adsorbed by the zeolite following a cold engine start and is held until the zeolite reaches its desorption temperature at which time the hydrocarbon is released and passes through the porous walled substrate for conversion by the catalyst.

    • An air/fuel ratio controller for an internal combustion engine including a memory having numbers stored at locations addressed by engine operating points with the locations addressed by the engine operating points being updated during closed loop operation in accord with the value of a closed loop adjustment of the air/fuel ratio. Each memory location in the memory is updated during operation of the engine at the corresponding operating point in accord with an update time constant having a value so that the number stored tracks adjustment value producing the predetermined desired closed loop air/fuel ratio during varying values of engine temperature. The update time constant is varied directly with the value of engine temperature so that the rate of adjustment of the numbers in the memory is greater during engine warmup where engine temperature increases rapidly. The memory is used during closed loop operation to preset the closed loop adjustment at least when the engine first operates at an operating point.
