    • Method and apparatus for cutting elongate articles (e.g., asparagus). Articles are collected together, organized into common lengthwise alignment and then supplied to conveyor means for moving them through successive operating zones. In one zone the articles are shifted to bring like ends into contact with a reference datum. In another zone cutting means are provided for cutting the articles into parts at one or more locations spaced predetermined dimensions from the reference datum.

    • A method for reproducing large numbers of pineapple plants using a three stage plant tissue culture technique. Also the product of latent embryoid tissue (i.e., bud clusters) used in the same technique. In an induction stage, latent embryoid tissue is derived and induced to grow from an excised plant meristem. Such tissue is then grown or proliferated in an aqueous nutrient medium under conditions whereby differentiation of tissue into plantlets is inhibited. In a preferred method, the latent embryoid tissue is proliferated to a desirable amount and then transferred to a storage bank for unlimited storage. When desired, a portion of tissue may be removed from the bank and further proliferated. Also, the storage bank product. Then, in a differentiation stage, the latent embryoid tissue is caused to differentiate into plantlets.

    • A method and apparatus for handling various articles that are of comparable size and where the articles are received at a nonuniform rate. Two (i.e. first and second) conveying means are employed with paths of movement through a common transfer and accumulator region. In this region the articles are transferred in a random fashion from pockets of the first to pockets of the second conveying means. The transfer takes place at such a rate that all of the pockets of the second conveying means leaving the transfer region are filled whereby the second conveying means supplies the articles at a constant rate. The transfer region also serves as an accumulator in that a substantial number of articles are maintained in this region, thus accommodating substantial changes in the rate of supply of articles by the first conveying means without affecting the desired uniform rate of supply by the second conveying means. The embodiments disclosed include an apparatus making use of conveyors of the endless chain type, and apparatus employing wheels or discs having article receiving pockets. Also, one disclosed embodiment combines the accumulator means for orienting the articles.

    • A metal container having a vacuum sealed closure adapted for convenient and safe removal and which is reclosable. A container shell is formed at its open end with an intrusive shoulder and an annular rim formed by folding back the raw metal shell edge. The rim defines an outwardly and downwardly inclined ledge to cooperate with an annular gasket on the closure member for effecting a hermetical seal under the force of atmospheric pressure acting against a vacuum within the container. An annular bead on the rim functions to retain the closure member in place during the capping and sterilizing operations. One preferred embodiment provides a flat gasket on the inside surface of the closure member to cooperate in sealing relationship with the upper edge of the shell rim and in another preferred embodiment the annular gasket is used without the flat gasket.

    • Method and apparatus for handling and orienting elongated articles (e.g., asparagus) having a center of gravity displaced from the geometric center in a direction away from the lighter and toward the heavier end thereof. Employs the principle of tilting articles about their centers of gravity, together with moving surfaces upon which the articles are supported. The articles are caused to tilt with their heavier ends foremost and drop through one or more gaps formed between moving surfaces. Conveyor means collects the articles and delivers them with the desired lengthwise orientation for further processing. In certain embodiments the conveyor means may collect the articles within a given length range. Also in one embodiment the means provided for receiving oriented articles discharging from the orienting apparatus functions to retain the desired orientation in the discharge zone and to convey the articles away from the discharge zone for further processing. An article feeding device incorporates a V-shaped trough feeding a plurality of V-shaped lanes down an incline for controlled feeding of multiple lanes of the orientor apparatus.

    • A method and apparatus for lengthwise orientation of elongated articles having a center of gravity displaced from the geometric center. Articles in random lengthwise orientation are moved along a path interrupted by at least one gap. The gap length along the direction of movement is sized in relation to a given range of article length so that the articles of one orientation tilt about a fulcrum near one edge of the gap and drop through with their heavier end foremost. In one form articles of heavier end foremost orientation are segregated from the reversely orientated articles. In another form lighter end foremost articles which initially bridge the gap are tilted backwards and dropped through the gap with their heavier ends foremost. In another form a plurality of gaps are interposed in the path of movement with successively increasing gap lengths to both grade and orient articles of increasing length ranges. In still another form articles are dropped through gaps for length grading, and then through further gaps for lengthwise orienting.
