    • A system and methods for facilitating adaptive grid-based document layout. More particularly, the adaptive grid-based document layout system and methods feature a new approach to adaptive grid-based document layout that utilizes a set of adaptive templates that are configurable in a range of different pages sizes and viewing conditions. The templates include various element types and constraint-based relationships that define the layout of elements with reference to viewing conditions under which the document content will be displayed and that define other content properties. Through a layout engine and paginator, the adaptive grid-based document layout system and methods determines a desirable sequence of templates to use for adapting document content. Additionally, the adaptive grid-based document layout system and methods provides a template authoring tool and user interface for interactively drawing and arranging layout elements within an adaptive template.

    • A method and apparatus (20) for making an absorbent article can include a delivering of a first contoured web-strip (30a) from a first production supply (38) of contoured web-strip material, with the first contoured web-strip (30a) presenting a primary production sequence of side edge contours during its delivery. At least a second contoured web-strip (30b) can be delivered from a second production supply (40) of the contoured web-strip material, with the second contoured web-strip (30b) also presenting the primary production sequence of side edge contours during its delivery. In a particular aspect, the first and second contoured web-strips (30a and 30b) have been produced from a web (22) of absorbent material which has been divided to provided at least two web-strips (30) having a substantially nested configuration. In another aspect, the first web-strip (30a) provides a first orientation which presents a first sequence of side edge contours; and the second web-strip (30b) provides a longitudinally-reversed orientation which presents a different, substantially reversed sequence of side edge contours. In an additional aspect, the web-strips (30) have been separately stored to provide the first and second production supplies (38, 40) of contoured web-strip material.

    • A security system interface which uses the message passing capability of the distributed application to send messages to remote copies of itself and the security system at the remote system to carry out the remote user profile administration function at the remote machine. A message for a remote user profile administration function is constructed in a syntax used by a distributed application. The message is sent by a local copy of the distributed application resident at a local system to a remote copy of the distributed application resident at a remote system. The message is translated by the security system interface resident at the remote system into a user profile function usable by the security system. Finally, the user profile function is performed by a security system resident at the remote system. In the preferred embodiment, the distributed application is a database management program and the message is a data structure containing information for the remote user profile administration function.
