    • A method for testing tires includes setting a tire, with a predefined inflation pressure and load condition, in rotation on a surface with a predefined speed, and applying a pressure against a sidewall of the tire in proximity to a contact area of the tire with the surface. The pressure is applied using a shaped body for deforming the tire sidewall according to a profile including at least two portions with opposite curvatures. A related apparatus includes a surface, an arm for supporting a tire, a device for setting the tire in rotation on the surface, and a shaped body movable transversely with respect to the tire between a non-operative position and an operative position. In the operative position, the shaped body pushes against a sidewall of the tire to deform the tire sidewall a predefined depth with respect to an undeformed profile of the tire sidewall.

    • A torsional vibrator comprises a direct-current electric motor provided with induced windings supplied with direct current through inverter means capable of changing their polarity in an alternating manner with a preselected frequency. To a shaft of the electric motor a wheel is made integral that is formed by a rim and by a tire and acceleration transducers are associated with the rim and with the tire of the wheel. The shaft of the motor is driven to execute angular oscillations that torsionally excite said wheel and cause it to vibrate in rotational direction. The acceleration transducers detect rotational vibrations and provide measurements of acceleration of the rim and of the tire.

    • The distribution of a specific pressure in the ground-contacting area of a tire (4) under examination is detected by means of a plurality of sensing cells (7) distributed on a plate-like support (8) applied to a rest surface (2) acted upon by the tire through its rolling surface (5). Each sensing cell (7) sends an electric signal correlated with the specific pressure applied thereto to a processing unit (10) through which the processed signals are sent to a display device (12) graphically representing the distribution of the specific pressure in the ground-contacting area. By causing the tire (4) to roll on the rest surface (2) and therefore the sensing cells (7), the dynamic variation of the specific pressures in the ground-contacting area can be detected. A protection sheet (11) interposed between the rolling surface of the tire (4) and the sensing cells (7) protects the latter against risks of damages due to tangential shearing stresses produced at the ground-contacting area.

    • An apparatus for testing a test wheel, provided with a tire and a rim, by passing the wheel over an obstacle. The apparatus including a road-wheel, a steering knuckle capable of rotatably supporting a hub and the test wheel, and two suspension arms supporting the steering knuckle. The apparatus also comprises a first, second, third and fourth leaf spring connected to the suspension arms and to a supporting frame, a fifth leaf spring connected to the steering knuckle and to the supporting frame, and a pneumatic spring in engagement with the steering knuckle and with the supporting frame. First and second acceleration transducers associated with the hub provide measurements of natural frequencies and dampenings of the tire in a radial and in a longitudinal direction. The apparatus can be used both in a movable-hub mode and in a fixed-hub mode.
