    • A threaded type tamper-indicating closure in which the tamper-indicating ring is separated from the cap element of the closure as the closure is opened, in which the tabs which contact an undersurface of a bead on the outer surface of an engaged container finish are prevented from flexing radially inwardly beyond a limited degree so as to assure that the tabs will function immediately as the closure commences unthreading. In some of the disclosed embodiments, this is accomplished by positioned the pivot axis of the tabs either radially inwardly of the inner edge of the tabs when they are in relatively unstressed condition, or in a common vertical plane therewith, so that the tabs pivot radially outwardly as they come into contact with the bead. In other embodiments, the tabs are of sufficient axial length that they contact the outer surface of the container finish before substantial pivoting occurs. In still another embodiment, the tamper-indicating ring includes an upper wall member of relatively reduced thickness to enable both bending and flexing radially outwardly during installation to enable relatively rigid tabs to clear a radially outwardly extending bead on the container neck or finish. The tabs extend radially inwardly from an upper edge of a relatively thicker lower wall member of the tamper-indicating ring, and do not substantially bend or flex relative to the lower wall member during either installation or removal.

    • A threaded closure for pressurized containers, typically for carbonated beverages is disclosed. The closure includes a deformable liner of non-vinyl polymer which is cold formed in the closure using known techniques in such manner that the liner physically bonds to the inner surface of the end wall of the closure to be retained thereby in the absence of a peripheral lip or projections on the inner surface of the end wall of the closure. The closure itself may be either injection molded or compression molded. The usual tamper indicating ring is formed to include frangible bridge members either by molding or a separate slitting operation. The pivotally mounted tabs for separating the tamper-indicating ring are sufficiently rigid to avoid flexing at points other than at an outer edge hinge axis where pivoting is possible only to a limited degree, thus assuring the severing of the frangible bridge members at an early stage of opening of the closure.

    • An improved tamper-indicating ring construction for threaded closures in which the closure and tamper indicating ring are provided with mating camming surfaces which are brought into contact when the closure is unthreaded from a container finish. The angle of the camming surfaces with respect to principal axis of the closure is substantially greater than the lead on the threads of the closure, so that when the closure is rotated to open the container, the camming surfaces push the tamper indicating ring downwardly to break the interconnecting bridges which link the ring and the upper part of the closure. The bridge members are positioned upon the camming surfaces and are oriented almost transversely to said principal axis, so as to be broken by shear rather than tensional stresses, this permitting the use of relatively stronger bridge members with the assurance that they will be broken with relatively little effort on the part of the user. In one embodiment, means is provided for splitting the ring upon removal of the closure so that it remains interconnected to the closure rather than the container finish.

    • An improved tamper proof ring closure construction for use with threaded bottle finishes normally used for containing carbonated beverages or other contents which are under pressure. The ring includes hingedly connected hook-like members integrally molded to the inner surface of the ring. The ring includes an inwardly directed lower flange which supports the hook-like members against movement past a predetermined point when the closure is unthreaded. As the closure is unthreaded, the usual frangible bridge is at least partially ruptured, and continued pressure of the hook-like pressure upon the inwardly directed flange results in rupture of the body of the ring, so that it may be completely removed, thereby facilitating recycling of the container.

    • An improved threadedly engageable container closure having a frangibly interconnected tamper-indicating ring, in which the tamper-indicating ring includes a relatively thin upper portion and a relatively thicker lower portion defining a circular recess of rectangular configuration. The tabs are interconnected to an inner upper edge of the lower portion of the tamper-indicating ring by an area of cross section sufficiently thin as to impart elastic memory between the lower portion of the tamper-indicating ring and the upper portion. When the closure is installed, the tabs pivot to operative position, and remain so as the closure is installed, the relatively thinner upper portion of the ring expanding uniformly through contact of the outwardly-directed surfaces of the tab against the inner surface of the upper portion of the closure ring.

    • A plastic closure for a container, such as a bottle having an externally threaded neck, has a top wall, an internally threaded sidewall, and a seal comprising outer and inner concentric sealing members that extend downwardly from an inner surface of the top wall. The outer sealing member extends downwardly farther than the inner sealing member and is substantially thicker than the inner sealing member. The outer sealing member is disposed to engage an outer corner of the rim of the neck of the bottle when the closure is threaded onto the bottle, and the inner sealing member is disposed to engage the top of the rim after engagement of the corner with the outer sealing member. The outer sealing member deflects outward slightly, and the inner sealing member deflects upwardly and inwardly. Movement of the top wall of the closure toward the rim is limited by a shoulder between the sealing members, so that when the closure is fully threaded onto the bottle, the inner sealing member is spaced from the inner surface of the top wall of the closure.

    • A linerless plastic closure has an integral frusto-conical sealing ring that seals with the rim of the neck of a container when the closure is applied thereto. The sealing ring has a hinge portion at an upper end thereof with a wall thickness that is small relative to that of an adjacent portion of the sealing ring, and has a preformed internal circumferential bead positioned to engage the rim at or near its top inner region. As the closure is applied to the container, the outer portion of the sealing ring first engages the rim, and the sealing ring is easily deformed by virtue of the hinge portion. After the bead seats on the rim, the sealing ring is stretched outwardly completely over the rim, with the bead serving to resist stretching from the hinge portion. An internal circumferential shoulder extends downwardly from the inner surface of the top wall adjacent to the side wall of the closure, engages the outer portion of the sealing ring, shapes the sealing ring to the rim, and clamps the outer portion of the sealing ring to the top outer region of the rim.

In a modification, a small number of relatively strong bridges is added to prevent drooping of the tamper-resistant band if some of the predominant bridges break inadvertently before removal of the closure from a bottle, for example.
