    • A data communication system is disclosed that utilizes a synchronized serial bus for communication between multiple stations connected to the bus. A token is employed such that when owned by a station it allows that station to transmit high level messages over the bus and command other stations to transmit high level messages to it if required by the token owner. Fundamental events called primitives are perceived by stations. Each station capable of token ownership embodies the same set of rules, the rules in turn defining the circumstances when perceived events cause a station to change from one state to another.Fundamental sets of rules, or modules, are used in the communication system to achieve a system for the automatic generation of a token list of stations with periodic ownership of the token, as well as for expansion or contraction of this token list. In addition, automatic change in the token pass handshake protocol is described.The communication system allows bus interconnection to stations having no potential token access, with communication control provided by master stations which have token ownership capability.

    • An electronic lighted safety marker system used by emergency responders to warn motorists of the presence of an accident scene ahead on or beside the roadway is provided by the invention. Such safety marker can be deployed individually or in groups by the emergency responder along the perimeter of the accident scene and ideally ahead of it along the roadway to provide adequate warning to approaching motorists to avoid the accident scene. The safety marker contains a power source, a light panel, a protective shield for the light panel, and electronic circuitry for controlling the operation of the lights in a predetermined frequency or pattern, and may be automatically actuated and self-righting when it is dropped onto the ground or other hard surface. The safety marker can also contain an incursion warning system against incoming vehicles, an early warning radar transponder for sending a warning message to such incoming vehicles, a GPS location detector and transmitter for providing the location of the safety marker and its associated accident scene to a central dispatcher, and a gunshot sensor for detecting the occurrence of gunfire around the accident scene and its location to provide that information to the central dispatcher.

    • A processor unit for a multipoint audio-video conferencing system, wherein the processor unit includes a host processor for controlling operation of the audio-video conferencing system.     • An electronic process controller comprises a digital computer programmed to digitally simulate the functions of each of a plurality of conventional analog and discrete control blocks and a process operator's panel for selecting and arranging these simulated blocks into a simulated control circuit configuration. The operator's panel provides means for direct operator selection of: (1) the input signal to be processed by the computer; (2) the arrangement of simulated blocks for processing the input signal in order to derive an output process control signal; and (3) the output control device to which the output signal is directed. This controller permits assembly and modification of simulated analog process control configurations in a manner analogous to the assembly of conventional hard wire control circuits without the expense of wiring, breaking, and rewiring of hard wire interconnections. At the same time, it permits the operator to use a computer for providing analog control functions without knowledge of a specialized programming language.

The data connection system allows the user to "patch" signals from source to destination with simple commands. The system then provides the data path and conversion processes through selection among prestored process tasks or "softblocks" which are connected to "sockets" by software "wires". Within a finite capacity, one or more data paths of varying degrees of complexity may be connected or disconnected, at operator command, without interruption of existing or non-altered system connections and functions.     • A data transfer system including a byte bus which provides an eight-bit data transfer between a processor and a plurality of port circuit boards. The system provides dual address and interrupt functionalies in the processor-initiator data transfers which may be initiated in either direction. The processor data transfers use a two-level address management scheme, which once initialized provides rapid access to a select number of address locations from a large number of available addresses allocated to a variety of port circuit boards and addressable functions thereon. Furthermore, the select addresses are assignable according to an interrupt priority value which allows for the rapid identification of the address requesting an interrupt service, and also for the subsequent provision of an interrupt service vector to the processor to provide the appropriate processing of the requested interrupt. The resulting apparatus and method provides substantial compaction of the communication data distribution system and software driving utilities.
