    • A preferred embodiment of a wire matrix print head assembly 10 is described having a housing 16 supporting a plurality of print wires 22 that are capable of moving between retracted nonprint positions and extended print positions for printing indicia onto a print medium. The assembly has a plurality of electromagnetic actuators associated with corresponding print wires 22 for rapidly driving a selected wire upon energization of corresponding electromagnetic actuator. Each electromagnetic actuator has a yoke 76 with five magnetically interconnected poles 84, 86, 88, 92 and 96 and two electrically interconnected coils 100 and 102 surrounding poles 86 and 92 respectively. Each electromagnetic actuator includes an armature 74 biased against and pivoting about an outer pole 88 to move an inner end against a print wire when the coils 100 and 102 are concurrently energized with the same directional polarity. Coils 100 and 102 are separated by the center pole 84. The coil 102 has a smaller profile than the coil 100 and the armature 74 tapers from the outer end 104 to the inner end 108 to enable the electromagnetic drive elements to be angularly spaced about a center axis in a very compact relationship.

    • A rotary internal combustion engine has as its principal components (in one embodiment): a drive shaft; two annular carrying walls, each supporting at least two arcuate pistons, the carrying walls being mounted upon the drive shaft through inner one way clutches such that the pistons of the two carrying walls are interdigitated; an annular housing connected to the outer edges of each of the carrying walls through outer one way clutches; and two endplates supporting the carrying walls. The pistons divide an operating chamber defined by the drive shaft, the two carrying walls, and the annular housing into four isolated volumes which function as the work chambers of the engine. The intake, ignition and exhaust needs of each work chamber are supplied through ports in the carrying walls which communicate with grooves and commutator strips in the endplates. The clutches are aligned so that when any two adjacent pistons are forced apart (as by combustion in the work chamber formed by the two pistons), the carrying wall supporting one of the pistons locks against the housing and releases the drive shaft, while the carrying wall supporting the other piston locks against the drive shaft and releases from the housing. Thus, combustion in successive work chambers is transformed into rotational motion of the drive shaft. Since opposite pairs of pistons are mounted on the same carrying wall, the expansion of one work chamber changes the volume of the remaining work chambers, facilitating the compression, exhaust, and intake operations in those work chambers. The engine is adaptable to a variety of operating configurations.

    • A web feed tractor mechanism 10 is illustrated in the drawings for moving a web material in a longitudinal direction in which the web material has perforations along edge sections 16 and 18 for enabling precision movement of the web particularly for use in computer output printing. The web tractor mechanism has two parallel tractors 34 and 36 that support and drive tractor drive belts 54 and 56. The belts 54 and 56 have drive pins 70 and 72 respectively for engaging the perforations along the opposite side edge section 16 and 18. Preferably the pins 70 have a reduced cross-section that is both longitudinally and laterally symmetrical, with lateral and longitudinal dimensions that are substantially equal. The surfaces of the pins 70 engage the inside edge of the perforations and drive the web forward while preventing lateral movement of the edge section 16 to provide lateral stability. The pins 72 have a reduced cross-section in the lateral direction to accommodate misalignments and inaccuracies in the lateral direction of the pins and/or perforations to accurately and rapidly move the web in the logitudinal direction. This feature improves the accuracy and quality of the printing.

    • A magnetic actuator particularly suitable to be arranged in a circular array to form a wire matrix printhead for mosaic, or dot, matrix printing. Each such magnetic actuator of three poles being (1) and "E"-shaped core defining three magnetic poles which is substantially thin in the thickness of the "E", which is that direction circumferentially along a circular array of such magnetic actuators, (2) a single coil wound around the center magnetic pole of such "E"-shaped core, and (3) an armature striding over all three magnetic poles. The armature is maintained at its pivot point by an O-ring which creates no moment of force to the striding of the armature. The "E"-shaped core may be comprised of laminated, or of solid, magnetic material and may further be structurally in common with the cores of other ones of the magnetic actuators as are arranged in the circular array.
